It occured to me in the thread about this country's car hatred that we're not really seeing quite so much of this superficial envrionmental concern now people are too busy worrying about their finances. So what else is good about the credit crunch?

Every shop seems to have some sort of sale on. Similarly, second hand cars are starting to come down (Top Gears talk of £45k V8 Vantages had me contemplating a loan...) and I daresay it's a factor in petrol prices.

All those bloody property programs have gone. Hallejulah! No more god awful 'get rich quick by moving from Surrey to Devon' crap.

What else is there? Gotta be more.

Selling my 911 for £1k less than I had paid for it a year earlier and buying a £1k bimmer seems inspired!

No more muppets talking about how much there houses are worth. Easy come, easy go.

I'll be able to afford a family home on a multiple of income........

List is endless. Crunch is good for all in jobs and not leveraged.

Also, no one seems to talk about terrorists trying to take over the world anymore. A passing fad maybe? Maybe they've maxxed out their credit cards and can't afford it

there's a lot of money to be made by day trading bank shares. But that only prolongs the unstability of the market.

I suppose the best thing about this credit crunch is that the public are finally getting to see how badly this New labour has screwed the economy! People are starting to wise up a bit more, and i think they are becoming a little bit less prone to the short term (please elect me!!) policies that parties spew out in an attempt to 'buy' votes.

Benefit of the credit crunch? Well if you're a graphic desin agency, you get to make a fortune from creating new 'downturn' logos for the BBC.

Waiting for the bottom then buying property as a long-term investment. There's going to be some real bargains out there

Bob in this part of the world there are already things that look like bargains compared to the rest of the UK.

I guess you could say, and perhaps with some justification, that Nu Labia have helped in no small measure to take the UK deeper and thus feel the effects more than other comparable countries. Not being in the UK, I can tell you that it’s not as bad as the UK ‘seems’ to be.

Good point. Must be a fortune to be made by picking the right bank and buying shares now they're depressed.

I've actually just been left a load of shares in Barclays. No idea what they're worth, but I'm sure it'll be more in the future than it is now.

Like someone else said, I can't see the 'crunch being anything but a good thing for people who have a steady income and aren't tied to mortgages etc.

rent has come down because no-one can sell their houses, so the market is flooded.
Got an e-mail from my landlord yesterday stating that the rent was going up, i told him to pi$$ off and the rent should be coming down, funnily enough he still signed the contract at last years rate. cheeky fecker!

Serious question on the above comments:

Is any (Western economy) country in the world in a significantly better position to cope with the global problem?

Or to put it another way is there actually any evidence that our government have made things worse than they would otherwise have been AND that other countries have demonstrably made better decisions that put them in a better position now?

Strange, the rental market is booming where I have my house, as nobody wants to buy, so they all rent...

What are the yields? Couple we know are paying £2k p/m for an 850k place in Cobham (I say 850k - this is the price the owner tried to sell at). The EA informed them that there are 50 £1m new build places coming onto the market shortly.
