Was talking to a particularly annoying bought and paid for labour voting base member yesterday, a typical vicki pollard . I was laying it on a bit thick, but what the hell I pay for her lifestyle. I was saying that if the Tories get in at the next election they will scrap child tax credit. They will wont they?, well they better, why should we sponsor people to stay at home.

Tax Credits are for those who meet the criteria for Tax Credits.

Some of those who obtain them work - some are not working.

In principle I have no problem with the idea. In reality, they are a mess of gigantic proportions because of their complexity and pronesess to error and miscalculation.

I thought tax credits were for those who didn't work.
Working tax credits for those who do.
I'm in the US so I may be out of date.

You have no idea really do you ?

The idea behind them is to get people back to work and not sit on their arse all day because income support pays more than a min wage job

Christ, I hope so. Our glorious gubbermint gave us child tax credits. We maintained we were not eligible. We put the money they threw at us aside. Two years later we get a letter saying the gubbermint made a mistake, terribly sorry, but we want our money back. I have £4000 earning me interest, and I'll make the feckers fight to the death to get it back. hehe

The exchange of letters is an amusing diversion for me. Sad eh?

You should see the fun I'm having with my local council about money due to them from my deceased mother in law that they are determined to get from Mrs. Tunku because she had control of her mothers bank account. Money due to council is apparently to pay for the nursing home MIL was in. Mrs. Tunkus mum was in perfect mental health. It was the lack of legs and mobility that was the reason Mrs. Tunku had permission to use her mums account for her. Council don't seem to understand that whatever debt dear old Granny Wheels, as we called her, had with them, died with her. Estate was settled with no objections months before the council started their nonsense. hehe

Tunku's Tax Credit story is unfortunately typical of the inane way the system is operated.

EVERY year over £2 BILLION are thrown away by the government on Tax Credit overpayments. Although they have the authority to recover overpaid amounts, for political reasons they now do not pursue recovery in the manner they thought they would be able to.

Im an unashamed lurker lol my apologies. I hate socialism sooo much, but maybe the vicki pollard analogy was a bit predictable. Its just that i do know quite a few girls some single some not, who work hardly any hours part time yet get their money made up to x amount, im sorry but it really annoys me 'sponsoring' thier choice of lifestyle. Both girls, i know them well, have limited access to thier ex partners, (who dont contribute regularly), no doubt this increases the benefit they get. I think it might be the gloating of one girl who said 'ooo im goin part time' and will no doubt be better than if she worked full time, annoys me a bit, its creating a paid for socialist voting base, and is unsustainable in the long run.

Learn a bit more about the system before you start knocking it. If and when you are entitled to make Child Tax Credit claims, I am sure you will be quick off the mark to apply.

The Child Tax Credit is a replacement for the Child Tax Allowance - which essentially replaced the Married Personal Allowance.

I never heard anyone knocking these "benefits" when they were administered through the tax system.

What happens though when you diligently fill out all the forms, both parents work and use the money received to pay for childcare, then a letter arrives a year later to tell you that you've been overpaid by £1,000's of pounds?

How does that work?

See my previous post. The Tax Credits are fine in principle. However, the way they are administered is abysmal.

MANY people have been overpaid even though they did nothing overly wrong. The problem is that the credits are awarded based on your PREDICTED income levels for the upcoming year. As soon as you learn your true income levels for the year, you are obliged to notify the Revenue of the adjusted income levels, The Revenue then must adjust the awarded amounts either upwards or downwards depending on whether the income levels have risen or fallen compared to the original predicted levels.

The system falls down for three main reasons -

the applicants notify the Revenue correctly about their income levels (both predicted and actual) but the Revenue fail to make the correction to the Tax Credit amounts

the applicants don't notify the Revenue about changes in their income levels or circumstances

downright false applications i.e. tax credit fraud

In most cases, the applicants have done everything correctly but the Revenue have just been too sluggish in their response.

As the system currently exists, these problems are virtually impossible to solve.

Tax credit problems have now cost this country more than the Iraqi and Afghan campaigns combined.

That sensible approach does away with the overall dailymailesque rant efforts of the OP.

A couple of our staff have benefitted from these Tax Credits but they are badly administrated and seem to put a lot of responsibility on the person recieving them to be honest.

Absolutely - and many people have been put off making claims because of the bad experiences they have had trying to make the system work.

Tax credits are to give the average worker the equivalent amount of what they used to get via the combining of married tax allowances.

The big difference being that if you earn more than say £50K you get sod all.

Oh yes and you have to bugger around claiming for stuff now, that used to be automatic - maybe so they compensate themselves for fraudulant claims using the unclaimed money.

Tax credits is an abonination.

What a daft system! I work and we get tax credits. So I pay tax to the government, and then they pay some pencil pushers to pay some of it back to me???

Cut out the middle man. Give me a new tax code, pay less tax in the first place. But no, thats not the Labour way is it?

I have no problem with Child tax credits in principle. However in practice, due to the rate of withdrawel, it often means single mums work a 16 hour week as standard.

Also due to the method of calculation it is yet another factor that often makes single mothers better off than mothers in a two parent household.

The problem with tax allowances is that the individual making the claim has to be a tax payer to get the relief. There are many individuals out there who have no sources of taxable income (and they aren't all Vikki Pollrd types either) and who lost out big time under the old tax relief system.

The problem is not the idea - it is the way it is implemented.

Apparently Canada has a much more sensible (and simpler) version.
