Good aftermorning all,

I'm off to oz on Sunday, to Adelaide for 3 weeks and just looking for any ideas for this to do while we're there. My father in law is already out there and we are thinking of moving over in the next year or two so just going to have a look around and check it out.

Can anyone recommend any decent restaurants/clubs/bars or any interesting places to visit during the day please?

thanks in advance

Penfolds is nice to visit (the original location).

There's a car museum out and about in the hills at Birdwood.

Adelaide???? 3 Weeks????? my advice. take a good book.
Go visit the wineries and maybe drive to Melbourne via the great ocean road. You'd want to spend a week doing that though.

If you are there 19-23 November then you have hit the jackpot as the Classic Adelaide rally is on then and it's petrol head heaven.

I'm from Adelaide but it's been a while since I've been back for more than a flying visit and I know a lot has changed from those days so I'll keep my info more general.

Kangaroo Island might be worth a look, it's fairly popular with tourists, Victor Harbour as well, although schoolies might be on around that time of year.

In the city most of the museums and stuff like that are all along North Tce, at one end is the Botanic Park, the Zoo is around there somewhere as well, Rundle mall is the central shopping area. The main areas of interest as far as restaurants/nightlife will probably be around North Adelaide/O'connell st, Rundle St, Hindley St, Hutt Street and maybe over near the central market/chinatown between grote and gouger streets almost in the centre of the city.

Other nicer areas would include Norwood, Glenelg and Unley. I wouldn't bother with the farther out North or Southern areas, tends to be a bit bogan out there. I couldn't comment on individual restaraunts as from what I've heard a lot of things have changed since I left and lots of new developments. There are nicer restaurants hidden away in other spots, some are very good and very cheap, but you'd need to ask locals about those.

If you go to the beach most people say Glenelg is the place to go, but it's a bit busy there usually (this can be both good and bad) further down is West beach or Semaphore which are easier to park at and less busy (dare I say nicer).

If you can get hold of a car the drive to birdwood motor musuem is pretty good, but a 'known' road for hooning so sometimes a police presence or camera there. Pretty much all the roads in the hills are quite good though, a favourite of mine used to be Old Norton Summit Rd as it doesn't really go anywhere so isn't normally too busy, it's also only 15-20mins drive from the city centre. It's also a stage on the Classic Adelaide rally, but then so are most of roads round there.

There are the wine regions, but if you prefer beer you can do tours of the West end brewery (on Port Rd, hard to miss) or Coopers Brewery (better beer, harder to find).

For a city of well over 1m people I found it disconcertingly quiet, but maybe that's the appeal! Perhaps because the city centre is disconnected from the outskirts by a massive park all the way around.

There are some good pubs in the centre (can't remember names - in the north east corner of the centre?, some museums and galleries which aren't too exciting, or you could get the tram from the city centre to the beach at Glenelg.

Otherwise hire a car and head north - visit Coober Pedy and other crazy outback places for more interesting experiences!

Shag a tall blonde Australian girl, then shag a tall brunette Australian girl. Compare and contrast. You may need to do this on several occasions but it ought to relieve the boredom.

Sound advice there! 3 weeks and you will be bored out of your brains. Take a 2 day drive down the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne. And visit a few wineries on the way back via the Princess Highway.
And you most likely get a speeding ticket from the local Over zealous Nazi's Traffic Plod, as a lovely memento of your stay in Oz. Don't worry, it's just like a UK ticket, it doesn't apply to foreigners as they don't take money on the spot smile

I too spent a couple of weeks in Adelaide last year. Loved the place - yes it was quiet, but loved the open spaces, the quiet roads, suburbs and greenery (sorry, but live in Dubai, before that Hong Kong).

Glenelg is a good place to visit also Kangaroo Island (stay overnight if possible), a trip to the wineries is a must do thing. Try and see if you can book a room at one of them and spend a few days going round. I was pi$$ed by the time I had gotten around 3 of them (some good $h1t they let you taste).

Very nice restaurant on a hill, damn can't remember the name. Central market is a good place to stroll around, some good pubs to be found as well, decent kebab shops for afterwards as well.

I enjoyed the life there so much, i ended up buying a house in Glenelg!

To get an idea of what the locals think of Adelaide:

I've visited and enjoyed it. Glenelg was a great beach side suburb 10 years ago. Its a nice little town overall.
