Just want to check what you actually need for the trip.

Looking at the below site it looks like you should have the following:-
Typhoid
Hep A
Diphtheria
TB
Hep B
Rabies
Meningococcal Meningitis
Yellow Fever
Japanese B encephalitis
Tick-borne encephalitis
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/travel/africa/south_afr...

Im guessing you have to pay for these jobs so how much are they? Also apart from your normal hrs doc opening hrs where can you get it done (I work 40 odd miles away from my local GP and have no leave for the rest of the year (3 week honeymoon has used that up). Can I walk into a GP which is close to where I work for these jobs?

As Im a contractor if I have to take the morning off for the jabs due to opening time & travel it makes it F&*king expensive!!!

I'd consider going private for the jabs given I can get it done on the weekend.

I had precisely none of them before a trip to the Garden route earlier in the year. I think the rules for Africa general and South Africa round Cape Town are different.

You don't need any of those for that trip. Go to some of the remote game parks and it makes sense.

Sounds over the top to me. South African climate ranges from pretty much tropical to temperate and disease risk varies accordingly. For example, in the North there is a risk of malaria but not down in the Cape or the Garden Route. When we did the Garden Route ealier this year, we didn't have any special jabs although as a family we are fairly up to date with innoculations. I would check with a decent travel agent what is required for that specific area of SA before getting jabbed in the backside (and the wallet) for eveything possible.

cheers
Nigel

P.S we had an amazing time there, despite a little local difficulty involving a bushfire & our hotel...you'll love it.

I visit SA every 1-2 months - I've not been having any jabs!

Only place you need to worry about is the far north of Kruger Park...

For the south of SA you don't need any jabs. Climate is like southern France/Spain. So if you are just tooling about Capetown, the Plet, Knysna etc, don't bother. If you venture further into Natal and more northern provinces, you better get it done.

The furthers north we will be going is the Cango Caves. We're going to http://botlierskop.co.za/ . We'll not be going any further East than Port Elizabeth - maybe only Plettenberg

Ahhhh - Outdshoorn thumbup

Make sure you go to the wildlife park as well to see the cats (and cuddle cheetahs) and go to the Ostrich farm and ride those beasts! The inland road from Outdshoorn to CT is fantastic (around 5 hours).

Yes ive heard its fantastic too. Were planning on Knysna the twisty road up to Outdshoorn and the activities you mention & then there is a Canyon drive which is stunning.
Not long to go now!

Typhoid - unsure/Free?
Hep A - Free
Diphtheria - Free
TB - Free
Hep B - Free
Rabies - £96
Meningococcal Meningitis - don't know
Yellow Fever - around the £50 mark
Japanese B encephalitis - £143
Tick-borne encephalitis - don't know

These are the prices I paid a couple of weeks ago.
I booked an apointment with a consultant at local GP, she printed out sheets from appropriate place, go through what is needed, then puts in what she had. and I had to order the paid for ones (Japanese encephalitis took a few days as its special order) and go back at a later date to have them injected (I'm going this Friday). Bare in mind they have side effects too, so may be ill for a few days after.

Way more that I have had when going to SA.

If off to Kruger then Malaria and a coupel of others.

Rabies??

Sounds a bit over the top for your trip.

Oh, if you do the back road out of Knysna, head off to Pearl Beach - chore to get to but well worth it. Whales come in very close as very deep water and some very rugged coast line.

Reading up online it does suggest to ensure your refreshed/up to date on your current vacc's? How do you know if your up to date or not?

Some of those sound expensive but thats fair enough if thats what you need then will have to get them. Dont fancy the prospect of illness.... as if Im off work I lose a days pay so would have to get it done on a Friday and stay in bed all weekend.

Typhoid was free from my NHS GP.

Erm, the vaccination, I didn't actually catch typhoid. I think.

I have a card from teh GP that has current vaccinations and dates to renew.

If you are going soon you can forget the Hep jabs, take more than one visit and no guarantee the anti-virus will stick first time round.

Where you are going is sprayed to keep the risks of infection form mosquitos down.

As the Yarpee who sits in my office has just commented - 'Don't need all that ste mate, not like you are going to Bots!'

Never trust the internet 100%.

From Cape Town to Port Elizabeth is your main garden route.

I went there 2 years ago. Its was amazing. And you don't need all those stupid jabs. If you start heading into the north wild part of south africa and crossing the boarder, then yes but for the garden route. Its built up. There many little towns its great. Only 1 thing. George is rubbish. There a town about 50miles before it with a oil refinery there (can't remeber the name of it) but its has 2 lovely hotels there on the beach front.

I lived there for six years and I never had any innoculations or contracted any illnesses.
