Anniversary - what to do for a cheapish day out in London?
Discussion
It's that time of year again...
Due to impending wedding/attempted house purchase, we can't splash out too much this year.
We still want to make a day of it in London - don't go much so what do people suggest as nice things to do that are relatively inexpensive? A power-plod around Oxford Street is already decided upon by HiD.
Also - need restaurant recommendations, probably Covent Garden/Leicester Square/Picadilly area. Preferably Italian food but could be Chinese or bistro-style.

trip up the oxo tower?
After the 341,749th time, that still gets me.
Take her to Gaucho in Canary Wharf for a Steak to die for and that way you get to trundle up and down the river on the boats at night.
The other alternative is to hang the expense and blow a ridiculous amount of money like I have just done.

I can't believe you want to walk around Oxford Street. My idea of sheer hell.
Tourists everywhere walking slow/fast/zig-zag. Crowded shops and life-threatening traffic, all for a bunch of crap shops.
Go to the new Westfield centre if you have to do shops.
Then take your pick of the usual free stuff: Tate Modern, NH Museum, British Museum, Science Museum (IIRC free), walk along the South Bank, etc...

Good suggestions, thanks. Tourists everywhere walking slow/fast/zig-zag. Crowded shops and life-threatening traffic, all for a bunch of crap shops.

Trust me, I do not want to walk around Oxford Street! Might suggest the Westfield then can amble back to town via Holland Park, Kensington etc.

On your "power plod" around Oxford Street, a very nice and impromptu thing to do would be to lead her up to the Bond Street end, along South Molton Street, and along to Mews of Mayfair (www.mewsofmayfair.com). It is set down a cobbled, hidden-away passage, and if you didn't know it was there chances are you wouldn't find it.
On a dry day, a table outside and a glass of champagne (they have heaters) should set the anniversary mood going nicely...always worked for me!!
Enjoy - there are also some nice places to be found up Marylebone High Street and St Christophers Place - head North from Selfridges.

Try doing a bit of a culture trip, it would almost be free, try the free museums and art galleries (Tate is brilliant)
Walk along river, Do Trafalgar square, Camden town is different, Covent Garden to watch street entertainers, Canary Wharf to marvel at the ...everything
For food, try china town.

they have a display on fashion at the moment so should keep the other half happy and it is not as busy as the other two close by museums either always a plus in my eyes
