Dont know if its the same with carpets but for clothes you put a brown paper bag over the area and iron over it and it comes off on the paper.......or is that for chewing gum?

A carpet spot cleaner is your best bet; just follow the instructions on the back of the label. If none of this is handy, you can try one of several cleaning agents:

* Mild laundry detergent
* Mild dishwashing liquid
* Stain remover for clothing
* Vinegar

Take your choice of carpet cleaner and dab onto the stain taking care to blot, not rub. When you rub a stain you risk not only spreading the stain, but wearing out the carpet fibers as well. Blot until the stain is lifted. Rinse by blotting with a damp sponge until all the cleaner is gone.

As mentioned the iron will work but don't expect it to look like the wax was never spilled.

Yes, worked perfectly for me. Keep moving the paper around as it takes the wax up.

Scrape off the worst with a kitchen knife first, though.

yes or brown parcel wrapping type paper - it gets the wax out but you may need something else to lift the colour.

Just pour some petrol over it, chuck a match at it and woof your problem solved.

yes That should get the wax out. You might need that '1001' stuff afterwards.

Has it really come to this? I know how to get stuff out of carpets?

Back in my day people would call Yellow Pages for help in this type of scenario. A little old man would then turn up and fix everything.

Freeze it first ( using ice-cubes or a 'freeze it spray can'). This will harden the wax and enable you to get most of it off. Follow up treatment... the iron and wrong side of the jiffy bag treatment ie. the waxy part of the jiffy/brown bag faces the carpet wax and the iron on the unwaxed side.

I managed to get red candle wax on a fleece jacket sleeve and although the wax has gone there is still a slight staining showing where it was.

Would suggest if it's an expensive carpet you hire a professional to fix the problem....otherwise move the furniture around so it gets hidden smile

Iron and kitchen roll to remove wax. Next, spray carb cleaner (or brake cleaner) lightly on a white towel, and then dab on the stain to remove the colour.

Works beautifully, but use the cleaner sparingly, it's very powerful and can easily remove all the colour.
