Thinking the unspeakable
Discussion
Every now and then I come across a situation and immediately a response pops into my mind. For instance, I read a sad story abut a child that has been born with some genetic disorder (a disorder that is well defined medically and which is uncurable and means that the person concerned will lead a life of a few pain filled years, and will then die) and I think why on earth is that child *** *** to ***** and spare it and its parents a few years of misery?
What I want to share with you is the frustration I feel knowing that I dare not speak my thoughts aloud or write them on a forum. Anyone else feel the same? Are you braver than me?

Stop being a coward. Why do you repress your opinions? Internet fora provide a (relatively) low comeback environment. Look at BSR, for example. What I want to share with you is the frustration I feel knowing that I dare not speak my thoughts aloud or write them on a forum. Anyone else feel the same? Are you braver than me?

Explore it - what you're describing is nothing more than euthanasia, which many people would agree with. The only difference between this case, and someone older dying of something unpleasant, is that it's a chiiiiiild. Won't somebody think of the chiiiillldren?
On an unusually serious note, it is easy to make that judgement for yourself, but I know a woman who fosters such children knowing they will die- and everyone who knows her will say the same. Every kid she fosters gets some kind of life. Certainly better than no life. THey also often live an awful lot longer than expected.
I would also venture that if you ask any parent with terminally ill children if they would rather have had the limited amount of time with thier child, or it never happened in the first place- a high percentage would say the former.

That's what I'm on about, that's why such thoughts are unspeakable. As soon as such thoughts are spoken, that's the kind of response that will be made (and that's a very moderate, gentle response, most would not be)I would also venture that if you ask any parent with terminally ill children if they would rather have had the limited amount of time with thier child, or it never happened in the first place- a high percentage would say the former.

It's called a discussion. Welcome to Pistonheads, and indeed the world.

It's not really unspeakable, although parents who have experienced this would probably disagree with you.
I think that about people who have been severely mentally disabled, and need 24 hour care. If that ever happened to me, I would much prefer to have someone hold a pillow over my face for a few minutes and draw a line under it there. Why spend the rest of your life as a dribbling fool with no understanding of the world around you, and needing a dedicated team of people and thousands of pounds to look after you?

There's also a medical side to the argument - if a cure could be found, the problem that causes all the grief wouldn't exist, but doctors need live patients to try their hardest and advance medical science.
Treatments may not work or may do little to prolong lives or improve them in any way, but if they do succeed, and build on the success of previous research, then maybe the future could be brighter than you think.
Certainly if the stigma of stem cell research was removed by the hand-wringers, we could make leaps and bounds with the science and these tragic terminal cases might have some hope.
Just killing them doesn't do the sufferers who want to live any favours in the long term.

Provided you put your thoughts in a carefull manner, you can say most things provided they are full understandable, which they are.
What does it matter if someone forcefully disagrees though?

The next time you come across that person you might agree wholeheartedly.
WHat are you actually scared might happen?

As to what was I scared of? well, being banned from that forum, I suppose, which would be a particular nuisance
You are the least offensive person ever.
If you get banned for expressing an opinion then it is a stupid forum.
Having said that, under the circumstances of the thread it would probably be somewhat insensitive to have said it!
But I would have laughed at your innapropriateness if that helps any.

No point in posting something on any thread which is irrelevant to the thread, you're always going to get pasted for that.
A thread raising money for a kids treatment isnt about discussing what should be done/happen to the kid is it !!
You do realise life is to short to give a fook about being scared.... in this respect an insight into the short lives of such children would hammer this point home.
some people are living but dont know they are alive !!
