They often land a million worth of fish each trawl.
Fish is expensive eating, or at least certain species are. Fishermen have always claimed poverty just like farmers. But if you look at what they are worth it often paints a different picture. The other fishing series about crabs, i can't remember the name now but some of the bigger boats the crew are taking 20/30k home for just a week or so work. Not bad if you can get it, but it is seasonal.

The fourth episode of Trawlermen 2 was first shown on Thursday 21 June at 7pm. The largest trawler in the Scottish fishing fleet was featured. It was the Chris Andra and this was its first trip. The Chris Andra (FR 228) cost £12 million with bridge equipment such as sonar and navigation costing half a million pounds. It was skippered by cousins William (Willie) Tait and Peter Tait. The Chris Andra has an 8000 horse power engine and fishes for mackerel off the Coast of Shetland. The ship engineer was Bruce Buchan, a dab hand at playing the banjo. Crew quarters looked luxurious compared to the small bunks of the other trawlermen. They were like small hotel rooms with en suite showers and satellite television. They even had a chef, Lewis Duffy, who was trained in top hotels. His galley was more like a fully equipped five star hotel kitchen and even had walk in fridges and freezers.
In just one haul the Chris Andra caught 500 tonnes of fish which was worth about £300,000.
If all of the boats were like that I'd fancy a go myself. In just one haul the Chris Andra caught 500 tonnes of fish which was worth about £300,000.

Deadliest Catch? What a load of over dramatised cobblers. They make them guys out to be utter heroes, yet they are only there for the money. Both series though, I am completely addicted too! And I dont even like fish! hahha
The REAL heroes are the guys who go out in rescue helicopters to save those silly barstewards when they fall over the side, because they have absolutely no common sense and have never heard of the concept of 'safety' or 'personal responsibility'.

The most dangerous occupation in the UK. How many of you keyboard warriors have been in a small boat in a Force 10?
Actually I have, and have been sliding up the deck on my backside after only 30 cm of water had hit me as it shot up the deck. Your natural instinct is to run, but you have to stand and face it, otherwise the next thing you know you are horizontal hoping your head does not connect with anything steel. To be honest this was in the oil industry working rig anchors, bigger wires, massive tensions and we kept out of the way mostly. What I have seen on 'Trawlerman' with regared to the lack of HSE awareness makes me cringe.moleamol said:

Force 12 actually. In a rowing boat. Using a mackerel as an oar.Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
