Been on the cards for ages....

BiL works for BMI and has known about this for months. Lets see what happens, but threats of cuts on routes and the number of planes being used is a little concerning. Then again, Lufthansa is one of the few airlines which are making a good profit and operate very well....

Lets see.

bmi are worth buying due to being profitable and owning so many LHR slots.

Yeah, Alitalia isn't looking particularly a good buy and its not even worth it due to the aircraft fleet. National carriers are always a difficult one, so I am not sure what will happen to them.

BMI need the economies of scale though. They are doing pretty well and have some very good routes. But in the world of the massive airline and code-sharing, they need that critical mass to help them. Join up with a bigger carrier or wait until there are only a few left? That was their choices and it seems they decided to join sooner rather than later.

Airline travel is set to have a bit of an overhaul in the next few years. Environmentalism will have an impact on numbers as well as concerns in key areas. Also, pressures on fuel prices and operational costs will have an impact as well as a potential global recession... Not necessarily a great time to be an airline at the moment.
