Understandable if no-one wants to admit to it, but has anyone used a professional to try and get a grip on things? I seem to have spent my entire adult life fixing problems for other people and sorting their lives out, but no-one seems to offer it in return?

It was my birthday yesterday, and I stayed at home and got smashed. This can't be good! I like to think of the forum comprises of well adjusted and slightly mental members, so maybe I can clarification.

There's no harm in trying it. You could find that it helps.

If it doesn't, what've you lost?

Go see your GP they will be able to refer you.

I have used, and still do from time to time the mental health team.

Have to say the Occupational Therapist was better for me than both the CPN and Psychiatrist.

Happy Birthday for yesterday away! (although I get the feeling happy probably isnt the right word)

So what your asking is where do the helpers go when they need help?

If its something deep rooted thats eating away at you it might be worth having a chat with a specialist. Or if you are just feeling a bit bummed because all the 'mates' that you were there for have since hot-footed it and forgotten your birthday, I'd say shout New set of mates needed! (but thats a challenge) or at least a few new faces in your circle of chums.

Thats a good place to start. There are a couple of professional bodies that escape me right now - Dr Sickman is your PHer of choice(Rebuker now). I would say, if you do the private route it can get expensive, you GP will only be able to give you a short course of sessions if they have a tame Psycho. Daft really, if you have a chronic pyhsical illness you can get treatment for ever, the fact it is "in your head" makes things different...

Not their fault, I'm the strong one remember! (My mid life crisis will be completely spectacular I reckon)

I suppose I should just google for someone local. Is their anything in particular I should look for? I'm pretty good at pulling out details from other peoples lives and finding where the problem lies, but I can't seem to evaluate myself! It'll probably be a waste of time, but I suppose I should try it. Not sure if I should see my GP, I'd rather do it 'off the books' so to speak.

I saw a councellor, at my university after having been in halls of residence from hell for a couple of months, he was the most unsympathtic guy I have ever met. Now whether this was the intention or not I don't know but it worked, never saw him again decided that I was going to have to sort myself out, and I did, well just about.

Just trying to say that despite the fact it was only one session, it was not at all what I expected and had I supose a totally unexpected outcome. I think you can access them through your GP you may not even have to see them just ask the surgery for advice.

Thats what I was thinking and said the same thing to a friend that was starting to use the 'depression card' a little too often. (I'm saying that in no relation to you by the way) I just advised the friend that having something like that going down on your medical cards is far from ideal unless it really is a last resort.

Cheers all, I will have a looksie. My 'tough it out' mindset just switched on again, but that's what got me in this position in the first place. I better go apologise to my colleagues for being a complete bd this morning...

Counselling is the way to go.

As has been said, go to your GP and ask for a referral.

Not sure how bad things are, but I also seem to be the one that helps other people. I seldom seem to get assistance from others. Bothers me occaisionally, then I think "would I really want help from them"
The answer is usually no biggrin

With regard to proffessional help, remember, it will be on your medical record.

I'm sure someone will tell you to go and get laid, so I'll just add "run off without paying, you'll feel so much better"

.....
And why is that a problem? 10% have had mental(brain)health issues, I would rather that on my card than being an alcoholic or drug user. It's is these types of perceptions that make mental health a hidden problem with little funding. Please remember, it is not a choice but an illness just like a physical problem - would you have a problem with a touch of "farmers" on your record? smile

that stigma is attached to mental illness.

I'm not proud to say I've suffered, but I'm certainly not ashamed.
