Hang on hang on. Does it mean 1/3 plus 1/4 OF 1/3 (because I read it wrongly to begin with?)

What is a ( 1 ) third (/3) plus ( + ) a ( 1 ) quarter ( /4) ?

1/3 + 1/4 = 7/12

Seeing as I'm bored, for any values of a, b, x, y

(a/x) + (b/y) = ((a*y) + (b*x)) / (x*y)

In this question we have a=1, b=1, x=3, y=4 giving ((1*4) + (1*3)) / (4*3) = 7/12

There endeth the (boring) lesson. nerd

Yeah I realise that bit, and how it works of course, but in my head the way it was worded was like you were saying "what's 100 plus 1/4", in which you would find 1/4 of the former and add it (if you see what I mean).

Everybody's reply was 7/12, so I can see I must have been wrong in my first thought, but it's just the way I read it that's all - the answer was 5/12 (i.e. 1/3 = 4/12 plus 1/4 of that which is 1/12 = 5/12).
