Ok, so after suffering a knee injury 5 months ago, i am now coming to the end of my tether with the NHS's incompetance. Im not going to go into too much detail but my consultant is a cock.

So lets say i decided to tell said consultant when he returns from holiday in 2 weeks, my knee is now no longer hurting me and i dont wish to persue things any further. Then say i took out private health insurance with prudential (which i was planning anyway after its sorted), wait say 3 or 4 months and then call them say i have a problem knee, start the whole process again.

So my question for the clever one's on here is, would i get into trouble, and would the pru be able to get hold of my medical file from the NHS?

goodluck - it took me 3 years to get my knee fixed on NHS and thus ended my time in the army frown

I would have thought details of your knee injury will be on your medical history, which when you apply for private medical insurance you will have to sign something saying they can access your history.

yep - but it was only 6 months according to their official waiting lists - because every 6 months they wrote and said they would have to postpone it for 6 months. fking wkers!

I would have gone private, but it was going to cost me something like £8k !!

What's up with your knee?

One of my knees cracks a lot and is uncomfortable (although not painful) and cracks when I climb stairs. I've not bothered the quack with it because I have a feeling it'll either be "don't worry about it" or an invasive investigation into my kneecap which will make things worse :|

wouldn't work I'm afraid. All the paperwork from your current problem on the NHS is going to your GP.

When you eventually make the private claim, the insurance company will write to your GP asking him details of related medical history.

He puts down about your knee, you are buggered. Likely pru will blacklist you for attempting to get stuff by deception. No more health insurance for you, big problem getting a mortgage in your life.

Not worth it.

Private consultation with a knee specialist £150. MRI privately about £400.

Cost of MRI on NHS organised by your GP £0. Waiting time in my area for MRI organised by GP 3 weeks.

it is the arthroscopy that costs the big money - and needed to clear up all the knackered cartilege (assuming that is what is wrong - usually is)

Cheers for the advice, i waited 7 weeks for the scan, plus the previous 5 for the x ray!!! so would i be right to assume i can still get private medical insurance after its sorted, but they just wont cover any problems relating to my knee?

Yeah, i had a knee ligament reconstruction about 3 months ago through the NHS, i found that they were pretty much unconvincing consultants and registrars until you see the top man, the surgeon. He is the king and i find they are really good.

As for the medical insurance, 2 weeks after my op, my company gave private health insurance. I had declare everything that had been wrong with me in the last 20 years. This included my knee obviously. I got a letter saying that i was covered except for any "injury, deformaty or disease of the left knee"

Hope you get it sorted

Oh and it would of took me about 4 months from the 1st consultation till the operation.

Someone at work has suggested i make a nuisance of myself and start writing letters to my local Mp councillor and the hospital administrations manager. Do you think this would help?

Hey Pies,

It depends on what operation you need. I had an ACL ligament reconstruction using the hamstring for a graft. i got told 80% of people who do the proper physio will get back to normal. if its the other ligament MCL as well that drops to about 30%.

I find that my knee feels strong but inflexible at the minute but i still have 5 months of physio left. The hamstring is now weak an the only thing that actually hurts on occasion.

If its a menoscopy, for cartilage removal then i think this is a very small operation and i think most people get back to training, relativly quickly.

Have they said whats wrong with your knee yet? They must know if you have had the MRI.

Pretty much exactly what they'll do. As for the referrals thing, due to the wisdom of our current government we are deducted money on the basis of not hitting referral targets, so now, unlike any time in my past, part of the decision to refer/not refer/and where to, is inevitably financial pressure.

And for some bizarre reason that get into the press as a problem with GPs rather than the governmentrolleyes
