With the way things are, is it worth putting a few grand away in the find (spread of stocks etc) looking for maturity in a couple of years time.

Or will the market drop even further nutralising any gain which may be made.

Not looking into getting into a big discussion on this but do people think that this may be a good idea for medium / long term gain. And any thoughts on where best to do this?

On the basis that one never knows where the bottom is.
Yes
In the absence of other suggestions I would suggest a 50/50 split in two unit trusts one UK and one global.
UK Equity income and a Global growth.

Disclaimer; You would not believe how much I am down this yearbiggrin

How about pound cost averaging? Although you'll have to invest for longer than 2 years to have a good chance of a profit.

What bankrupts most traders is that they keep calling the bottom. And then they average down to make things worse.

Related phrase: don't turn a trade into an investment. hehe

IMHO 2 years isn't a long enough time horizon. If you are happy to sit out 7-10 years (and investing in equity you should) then fine.
Frankly I would wait until the bottom has been reached and I miss out on the first 20% recovery, make sure it isn't a dead cat and then slowly build positions.
Cash till then.

On VW - possibly the most substantial short squeeze in history.
Trust me VW is NOT the most valuable company in the world. This is a totally false market.

Didn't say I would keep them.
