we can't afford to lose this industry, but I'm worried that we will. Loads of other countries waiting in the side lines, gagging at the chance of having it. 1/3rd of our GPD so if we lose this what is everyone going to be doing in 5yrs time?

Logging into PistonTêtes, using French electricity, on a French-owned network whilst a French-owned bank threatens to repossess my kidneys (because I'll have unwisely mortgaged them to pay for Norwegian petrol to put in a Russian aeroplane).

We'll be like a country that doesn't have much to export, a bit like austria but with more victorian buildings and less skiiing?

Now, in past times i really wouldn't have given a st. Could have lived by going fishing, growing veg in my back garden etc. but now i have a 22 wk old daughter and everything worries me. Not got much on at work, just getting by.But have been careful for the last 15yrs so got savings and not much dept. So do i really have that much to worry about?

As "The The" said in Heartland a long time ago,

Beneath the old iron bridges, across the victorian parks,
& all the frightened people running home before dark,
Past the Saturday morning cinema--
that lies crumbling to the ground,
& the piss stinking shopping centre in the new side of town.
I've come to smell the seasons change, & watch the City,
as the sun goes down again.

This is the land, where nothing changes,
the land of red buses & blue blooded babies,
This is the place, where pensioners are raped,
& the hearts are being cut, from the welfare state,
Let the poor drink the milk, while the rich eat the honey,
Let the bums count their blessings, while they count the money.

This is the 51st state--of the U. S. A.

I am sure that we will recover from this, both the UK and the USA (We basically caused this mess). Our countries have both been through worse.

You fools mocked me when I linked 9/11's "structural" fires to the "non-collapse" of the Euro tunnel. ITs all part of the conspiracy. The middle east have won as a result of our leaders lies and Dubai and other such banking empires are around the corner. We'll plough our savings into banking industries ran by radicals.

Stigmund Dude,Chill man. It's far worse than that.

It's been time to wake up since the Enlightenment but for most people that means accepting responsibility and taking action. Like that ever worked huh Karl?

Nothing lasts for ever. I'm sure the Romans circa 400AD thought everything was fine too... but countries and empires rise and fall. Greeks, Romans, Mongols, Britons, Third Reich - all had their day and are now gone. And the cycle is much quicker now.

Empires don't rise and fall if they are run well.China has been an empire of nations and regions for over 2000 years. The style of leadership may change but the political impetus doesn't. Rome only failed because of a fairly significant series of errors of judgement probaly starting with the ineffective response to Julius crossing the Rubicon,it had the potential to last forever.

It won't lose al of it, London has always been a great trading city for many reasons, however with the ascendency in the East you will see a lot of it move out there I think. So in 50 years the world financial centres may well be Shanghai, Singapore, Mumbai etc.

There is quite a difference between the USA and the UK.
The UK turned its back on manufacturing and doesnt reward engineering.
In the UK, bankers are Gods, bascially.
looking at the pityful salaries STILL offered for engineering in the UK- this doesnt seem to be changing. No matter, doesnt effect me anymore...
In the USA, even though people moan about the loss of industry and manufacturing, even though its no where near in as good position as Germany and Japan, its no where near as bad as the UK.
The USA will recover.....

I'm with you on this, just look back

ship building
mining
manufacturing
etc etc
now Banking

IMHO banking was just like any bubble. The pioneers have now been and gone, they early adopters made their money and the followers got left holding the bill.

The million dollar question is what the next one will be.
