Plasma Televison, PC, PS3, DVD player....... HEEEEELLLLLLP!!
Discussion
ok I have just bought this television.
Currently I am running an LCD TV with PS3 into HDMI, PC into VGA (with external speakers into PC for sound) DVD into scart.
What I want to do is run the PS3 through HDMI still, DVD through scart as before, BUT I want to be able to use the speakers in the telvision with the PC, would I use the component audio thingy???
BUT here is the crux I want to get a surround sound system, how are these connected are they through the component audio which is taken up by the PC??? Or is this what the "digital audio out (optical)" conection is for.
Please help someone as I am bloody clueless when It comes to this.
cheers guys

So reading that it would just be a case of connecting the "digital audio out" to the amplifier for the SS to the television?ETA that doesnt really help as it does not show a television with "digital audio out" connection.
Argh getting pissed off now haha

First things first lose the DVD player, unless your watching lots of region 1 DVDs the PS3 does a brilliant job of up-scaling.
Second it depends on the surround sound system you get. Or, the amp anyway. You would connect the PS3 via HDMI to the amp, then the DVD player via component if it has it, also to the amp. You could also connect your PC audio via component to the amp as well. Then connect the amp to the TV via HDMI and the PC via VGA.
When you go and buy your amp tell the guy in the shop what you want to connect to it and they will tell you which amps have the connections you want. Also go and get this months "What Hifi" mag.
P.S. if you want to run the audio from your PC to the TV you will need a cable that will split a speaker jack into RCA component out.
something like this

I have an "import" PS3 i watch a lot of DIVX and region-free Blu-ray DVD's but my old UK DVDs i watch on my DVD player.Second it depends on the surround sound system you get. Or, the amp anyway. So could i not just hook the digital audio out up to the amp then and everything else in the TV? Reason I ask is I will not always be using the SS all of the time and will sometimes just want to use the TV speakers.

Component is an analogue video connection, not audio.
Scart carries either Composite vid and audio or RGB vid and audio. HDMI carries digital video and audio.
Not sure what the question is?
What do you want the surround to do?
Not fussed about using the surround sound with the PC (just want sound through the television speakers)Scart carries either Composite vid and audio or RGB vid and audio. HDMI carries digital video and audio.

But want the SS to be used, when I want, with the PS3 and DVD player.
DVD player will either have optical out or coaxial out or both (if both, use coaxial) into the SS
PS3 I think has an optical out, plug this into the SS
Then just mute the television.
If the PS3 doesnt have an optical out, not sure, dont have one, then you can get boxes which will split the HDMI signal.

You could link the PS3 via HDMI to the TV then optical to the amp. The only thing is I dont know whether you would need to change the settings in the PS3 every time you wanted to use the surround sound. And you should get sound through both sets of speakers. I have not tried this though. Same with the DVD player scart to the TV then component to the amp.
The thing I forgot to say is you will need an amp capable of taking L PCM inputs. The PS3 cannot out put HD audio for an amp to decode. It decodes it internally and outputs L PCM. There is no difference, its just about where the decoding of the audio takes place. But some amps cannot cope with L PCM inputs.
By component I mean the two red and white ones (Phono?)

That last paragraph was all gobbldy gook to me! hahaThe thing I forgot to say is you will need an amp capable of taking L PCM inputs. The PS3 cannot out put HD audio for an amp to decode. But the first paragraph made sense and yes you have to change the settings because the PS3 is default audio through HDMI.
Is there no way of literally turning the SS on or off and returning to 'normal' TV speakers and when turned on using both?

Just Get an HDMI switchbox and pump everything through the HDMI connections, got mine from an Audio shop (may have even been Pc world) for about 30 squids, now everything is running via HDMI connections sweet as
Does mean that you have to use the HDMI switch remote but lets you run a number of things any way you need. You can buy these things on line just do a google
Cheers
the TV has 4 HDMI connections
