If you're gonna throw abuse, at least make sure it makes sense.

2.5" drive enclosure - pop drive inside - attach to other pc - unless HD is completely shafted you'll get the data out.

If you can't read it - try running a linux install on the other pc and accessing via that - Unbuntu or PClinuxOS as are easy to use

Just to clarify, here is the original thread...

Hi.
I have a Dell Precision M6300 Laptop, bought new in January this year.
All was well with said Laptop, until yesterday.
I was working on it on the train on my daily commute and shut down normally. I tried to re-boot about half hour later and it just wouldnt work?!?
It got to the screen where it says "PRESS F2 FOR SETTINGS OR F12 FOR [SOMETHING ELSE]" then the screen just went blank.
I have a warranty so spoke to Dell and they ran me through some tests. It wont boot in sfae mode so the guy was pretty baffled and said he would send me out a new hard drive today but also said it was unlikely it was the hard drive after only 9 or 10 months. I would have to pay for someone to try and retreive all the data from the existing hard disc. I have LOTS of work on there that I would be fked if lost!
Does anyone have any ideas?
Cheers

Hoppy

Like wsurfa said, get an external usb enclosure and attach the drive to another machine, then copy whatever data off that you need. That's the first step. Then you can look at rebuilding the drive, preferably with the recovery disks that should have come with the laptop.

Cheers mate, I will be backing up form now on.
thing is, some people are saying it may not be the HD, but maybe the motherboard instead. Or even the OS, Windows XP Pro?

So it tries to boot Windows but fails? Sounds very much like simple HDD corruption to me. Boot from a Windows CD and enter the recovery console.

Type

"chkdsk /r"

Without the quotes. 9/10 times this resolves your symptoms.

your boot sector is screwed. install xp or vista to another directory without reformatting. you should be able to see everything. if not, it's time to invest in some utilities and mount this drive as a second drive on another pc.
