Interview tomorrow....help needed.
Discussion
I've applied for a Teaching Assistant job as a sort of precursor to whether I want to do it full time and apply for a PGCE next September and have landed myself an interview at a Junior and Infants School in Dewsbury.
Nothing wrong in that but seeing as how most of the children are going to be non-White how do I make a good impression? I really want this job and part of the interview process will be to sit down with a group of children for 10 minutes and 'establish a relationship' with them and 'bring a resource of your choice' to aid you in doing so. I was thinking of bringing a Union Jack into the class and getting two volunteers to hold it up while the rest of the class have a discussion with me asking questions to the children and them asking me questions too.
I don't want it to look like I'm talking the p*ss though considering most of them are going to be Asian kids.
Help needed guys, any tips or otherwise will be of great help!

Yes.
Take a Union Jack in.
Super idea. -Perhaps shave your head too.
Regardless of how harmless this really is, just steer clear of all issues which could be...sensitive or devisive. Think up something else.
-Healthy eating -5-a day. -Bring in a range of foods bad and good. (Fits with healthy schools)
-Road safety, loads of resources on the net to print out. (Road acidents are biggest killer of kids)
etc etc.
Good luck though.

Good Luck.
Sadly in this day and age, I'm not sure how a Union Jack will be perceived, but I personally think it's an excellent idea for a prop...
That's what I thought, it's a symbol that promotes values etc. I couldn't think of anything else to bring really as there are too many issues surrounding them and most wont even be relevant to the subject of learning either.Sadly in this day and age, I'm not sure how a Union Jack will be perceived, but I personally think it's an excellent idea for a prop...

Yeah a Union Jack might give the wrong impression as there are many non-british kids, as if you are trying to provoke a reaction rather than involve the kids in your idea. Maybe a EU flag or even an american flag would be less contentious.
American flag might spark a 'reaction', the EU is something which they don't even understand I don't think (only 8 year olds).s
t, this is so flipping hard. I'm going bananas here. You were considering taking a union flag in and then woke up, right?!
First rule of job selection: turn up at the right place on time appropriately turned out
Second rule: reduce every other risk every time whenever and wherever possible
As indicated already, in this kind of situation it would be wise to avoid any comment on race, religion, tinfoil hattism etc that isn't demanded of you by the selectors - voluntarily raise diddly squat that's controversial. if they want to probe your inner sanctum
they will try.

Erm, alledgedly.
Or you could talk to them about the festival held there recently... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bradford/765232...

You could ignore the colour of their skin and simply treat them as children. The more you/we/everyone bangs on about race and how it can't be mentioned, the worse it gets.Schermerhorn said:
Ok, I'll scrap the Union Jack Idea
any other ideas? Nothing to do wit 5 a day fruit. They'd have a field day if they saw my fat arse lecturing them on eating healthy!
Keeping to the flag theme, how about a skull and crossbones?any other ideas? Nothing to do wit 5 a day fruit. They'd have a field day if they saw my fat arse lecturing them on eating healthy!

Hmmm - might be seen to hark back to our imperialist past...
