OK, I've already posted a couple of threads about our new puppy, here's another one...

She was 14 weeks old last weekend and the toilet traing has generally been going pretty well. However, she's taking to pi$$ing in the house again after a couple of weeks of not doing it inside at all.

Last night, I left the room and the dog had climbed onto the couch (she's not allowed on the furniture) and pished on it!

I put her outside for 20 minutes, when she came back in she slashed on the floor beside the mat at the back door! I smacked her (gently!), said "no" (loudly) and put her in the utility room where she went straight to bed. This morning, she'd peed on the puppy pad and shat on the floor. She's not shat inside for weeks now, she's been managing to hold it in over night and generally goes last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

I always take her outside to pee/crap (every hour at least and after she's eaten, before she goes to bed and as soon as she gets up.) She gets lots of praise for doing it outside and sometimes a training treat biscuit.

This morning, i got a text from my wife. She had been hoovering and the dog ran up the hall, pi$$ing as she was running, so has left a 30m trail of pi$$ on the floor!

I mentioned it to the vet when she was last there for her worming tablet, they asked for a urine sample and it was ok so no infections.

Any suggestions on how to stop her doing it?

Obedience traing starts next Saturday...

It does happen, our 20 week Golden Lab used to have the odd relapse. At that age, with some dogs, you still need to manage their toilet times for them. It's a case of taking them out every hour, or less if needed, and also after sleep, meals, and play. From what you describe it doesn't sound like a "marking thing".

If it helps, I've vowed never to have another dog again twice now due to having to clean up bodily fluids and solids.

ETF for fat fingers and grammar melt down.

That's the stage my wife is at... "If she doesn't get better - she's going"

Ours was fine by about 16-17 weeks. At 20 he's nearly perfect - sits, stays, etc. Stills chews stuff he shouldn't though and tried to rape our 18month old male black lab at the weekend, which was funny as hell (well not for the 18month old).

there is no point in punishing the dog, unless it is aware of why it is being punished - if you catch it in the act of taking a leak, bust its arse when it is actually doing it.

a small cage can work wonders, but it must be so small that it only has space to lie down - only put the dog in the cage when you are there, and gradually it will work out that peeing on its own bed sucks - give it an hour in the cage, then immediately take it outside for a leak - reward it loads when it pees outside.

I have a problem with one of my dogs peeing, she is kinda nervous and takes a leak as a submissive gesture, if I shout it pees even more to act more submissive.

you can get large absorbent pads to put on the floor, but I consider these to be a last resort - you are accepting that it will pee on the floor and just exercising a little damage control.

make sure you clean the liquid loads, remove all odour, as they tend to get their own spot and go there everytime.

you have to work out if the dog has a physical problem ie. weak/small bladder - has a mental issue - or has just not worked out the correct time/place to pee.

It's a dog, FFS.

Dogs st and pi55 when they feel like it.

Either don't have a dog, or get used to having an animal in your house.

FFS.

I got a cage from the breeders of my German Shepherd and used it on a night and when we was out of the house. Because it is like a bedroom for the dog it will not mess in it. Got the dog at about 4 weeks and by 12-13 it was perfect biggrin Now it's 2 years old and very well behaved when out, get comments from loads or people saying how nice he looks.

Persistance and watching them like a hawk all the time to correct them before they do it. Our pup was still randomly pissing on the hall carpet even after 9 months.

Punishing inappropriate urination is usually pointless. Often the puppy can not associate being punished with the urination. This can lead to the situation where for the rest of it's life the dog will not do it's business in front of the owner, but has to go round the corner to do it - it's a bit sad if your dog is scared to go to the toilet in front of you.

Get a cage. It provides a small secure area that it'll enjoy being in. As soon as you let the puppy out of the cage, take it outside and try to train it to pee on command (something like 'hurry up' maybe). If you say the command when you know it needs a pee, eventually it'll just pee when you say the word.

Because the cage is small, the puppy shouldn't mess in it. It understands that it doesn't want to mess in it's own home (which is the cage to start with), and as it grows it should come to understand that the whole house is its home.

Punishment is pointless. Positive reinforcement works much more quickly, and generally the best 'punishment' is no attention whatsoever. Dogs are often naughty for attention and negative attention (ie. punishment) is still attention.

Argh the wonders of puppy training! We were quite lucky in that we had wood floor everywhere in the house. I used to just use the tried and trusted routine of rubbing his face in it everytime he pissed on the floor (though a little messy for when it comes to a crap I admit) He only did it 3 or 4 times after this, so worked a treat for us

There are times when they have an upset stomach, but then there isnt much you can do about this other than a stern telling off

We always take our dog for a walk just before bedtime and he is pretty used to this. Dogs like routine and he nearly always does his business then

Have two dogs.

18 month Lab who decided to be house trained from the moment we got her.

6 month old Beagle which is the unstoppable pish machine. Like yours she went on the sofa, the worst was her running upstairs on a break out and pishing on the bed whilst I was in it on a Sat morning.

Like yours this was a deviation from the week before when she had been asking to go out.

Have taken her back to stage one, locked in her bed, out for a pee as soon as released, paper on the floor (which if there she always uses) and reducing amount of paper and moving it to the door.

If she pees on something she gets punished (if caught - and yes she knows), if she pees on the paper in the house it is ignored. If she pees outside she gets cheese and loads of praise.

As of this weekend we have only had one slip up in the house.

Have found there are two things dogs will do anything for. Cheese and Biltong. Get peeing outside associated with one of these and Bob is the preverbial.
