I just wanted to pay a cheque into one of my bank accounts. It was a fairly large cheque, but nonetheless I didn't want:
(a) advice on what sort of account I should pay it into
(b) questioning on whether I understand what "interest" is
(c) to be looked at as though it couldn't possibly be my cheque and that I had mugged an old lady who happens to have my father's name in order to get it
(d) to stand around for 10 minutes whilst the staff debated who was qualified to deal with said cheque
Yeah, yeah, I know, 4/10 not enough swearing.

was told that was *too much* for a classic account

Just check they paid it into the right account.
When I was going through my last house purchase, I paid in a cheque for £20k and the dozy bint in the bank paid it into the wrong account.
Thankfully I checked the receipt and told her she'd f
ked it up. All I got in the way of an apology was a grunt and a 'Well, it would've sorted itself out eventually'.
Grrrrrrrrrr

paid in a cheque from sale of business a while ago (yeah i don't know why i got a cheque either but i wasn't complaining) and the dozy bint got the decimal point wrong and only put in £9k!
£34k. This is into the main branch in Bristol so I doubt it is totally out of the ordinary. I was paying it into a current account because I had a paying-in slip handy and I didn't really want a handwritten (i.e. error-prone) paying in slip. I ended up with one anyway as they pretty much insisted on paying it into a savings account. I had to go back to the counter to stamp it, as effectively they left me with no evidence of the transaction other than something with no official markings that I could have made myself by picking up one of the paying in slips off the counter. Rubbish.
I recently went to take out some cash, just a bit more than they let you take out of a cash point.
I went in to the bank with my current account card, credit card, drivers license and passport thinking that would be enough to enable me to withdraw some cash which has sat in my current account for months.
But ohh no, the two cashiers were adamant I couldn’t withdraw any cash with out having my cheque book present. They couldn’t explain why though ? They just said i needed my cheque book to withdraw ANY money from MY account.
So after a 75mile round trip to my parents house to find a cheque book that had only been used once which was over 4 years ago. I went back in to the bank whereupon I was made to write out a cheque for the amount i wanted to with draw?
Is this normal? I have never had so much difficulty accessing my own money.
After handing over the cheque and making a few comments about the bank having cash flow problems but this was taking the piss, i eventually got the money and buggerd off and spent it.

I had a similar experience there which caused my piss to boil to the point where I cancelled everything and moved to HSBC

I had this last time I withdrew a largish amount of cash (~3 grand). I had card, passport etc but couldn't withdraw. Next day went into a different branch with chequebook+card and they happily handed it over, no other ID required. Seemed madness to me.I went in to the bank with my current account card, credit card, drivers license and passport thinking that would be enough to enable me to withdraw some cash which has sat in my current account for months.

Not that bad, but when i drew out some money for my trailer a few months back only £900 they did well.
She started out by counting about £250 in 20's in full veiw, then infront of the 10people waiting declaired she would have to go out the back to get some more money, came back, and carried on counting it out into £50 stacks spread around the whole counter area. Bundled it up and started posting it under the glass. Seamed supprised when i asked for an envelope.
Ive drawn out £5k in the past and felt less selfconcious or about to get mugged!
