Hi

Its a bit of a stupid question as im a new member but I just wondered where the heck Pistonheads get all their pictures of cars from? They have some really good pics but surely it must be a right mare getting images that arent copyrighted? Do users submit them and if so where as I want to upload some pics of my car?

The images come from cameras. You take the photo - you own the copyright. Then you post them smile

If folk really don't want there online images posted up on forums like this they can protect them in such a way as they can't be externally linked.

Other than that, I don't think anone really gives a fvck. Can you imagine the logistics involved in enforcing copyright infringements on the twenthundredbillionmillion instances of an image by people all over the world on forums such as this?

see you in court smile

ps knowing PH a copyright lawyer will be on in a minute and go into great detail about this aspect of the law.....maybe.

OK, good question. If you copy (steal) an image from someone else it is a breach of copyright and you're correct to pause before doing so. Copyright vests in the author, and with photographs the author is the photographer unless such rights have been otherwise assigned in writing. Payment for work does not confer copyright unless agreed in writing.

If you want more details ask in the Photo forum - there are quite a few professionals there for whom copyright is important as it's a matter of livelihood.

I have read of many people who have received letters threatening legal action for allegedly nabbing an image which has been copyrighted by Getty Images..

Somebody used the pic from my profile to sell a car on e-bay.
(not the current one as that's a painting)

He was selling the same car, he did admit in the advert that the main pic was not actually his car.
No big deal, if he asked I would have said ok anyway.

Photographers do tend to have favourable copyright laws.
Your wedding photographs unless you had then contracted as "work for hire" are copyrighted to the company of the photographer.

An architect may spend two years designing a building, along comes a photographer, click, he owns the copyright of the photograph of the building.
