Going to movie premiers in Leicester Square

The missus and I are off work next week and were thinking of going to London to hang around the Quantum of Solace red carpet like crazy fans.
BUT, I have never done this and will likely end up getting there too late, standing miles away and needing a pair of binoculars to see any of the actors.
Anyone done this before and if so what time did you get there to get a good spot? Hoping for some shopping, eating, sight-seeing time before hand.

Having managed to blag my way to a premier here a couple of times in the past - we had to be there about 2 hours before the showing as the celebs like to spend ages outside and we were told to get in to get seats.
I suggest you make a day of it in London and get out to there about 6pm and you'll be fine. Can then eat afterwards nearby.

I reckon I will aim for after lunch - will take the DS and some car magazines!
