It's an aluminium hinge, that has siezed - I took a plastic plug out of the top, but it appears blank inside. The plastic plug in the bottom is jammed in (glued?). It needs to come apart so I can free it up/grease it... grrr.. (Saturday DIY jobs!)

Will one half of the hinge now slide off the shaft - like a rising-but?

The two halves seem pretty firmly attached, and the hole down the middle is too narrow for a centre punch... I assume they're held together by a locking mechanism (screw?) of some sort, but don't want to go hacking around for fear of destroying it.

The hinge is off our front door, so it would be helpful not to wreck the thing... biggrin

It's possible that the 'blank' bit you see is the end of the hinge pin, which is formed into a mushroomed end in a press to stop the two alloy hinges coming off it.
In which case you'd have to destroy it to get it apart. smile

Might not be, of course.

I would say that either the pin is a press fit, so would press, hammer out with drift or the ends are swaged over so you'd have to drill the top off.

Mystery solved - youngest daughter finally fell asleep, so I could go out to the shed and put it in a vice.

It's a push fit, with a plastic sleeve. It must have been fitted hot, or hammered in though because it shredded the sleeve a bit pulling the hinge apart. The pin is corroded, hence the siezure. A bit of grease and it should run smooth now.

Wasn't that an exciting topic? Anyone else in the middle of Saturday jobs?

Only trying to recover from last night, believe me, I would prefer to be doing some odd jobs like yourself.

Excuse me for a while, i'm going back to bed via the bathroom..............

Fitting new headlamps in my Wedge and fixing the exaust tail-pipe on again.
No indoor DIY jobs to do, thankfully!
