I've been prescribed these due to a fairly constant, low-level sort of indigestion. Got home from the surgery yesterday evening and took one. Seemed OK, and no need to take any Rennies either, which was good.

Then, in the middle of the night I woke up feeling what seemed like extreme hunger. Not so much the desire to go and eat lots, more a sort of painful emptiness of the stomach. Also I experienced excessive salivation, as if I was about to be sick. Anyway, went downstairs and had a bit to eat, and eventually felt better, and went back to sleep.

This morning, though, I am still getting the same symtoms, not so acute, but still unpleasant. I haven't taken anymore of the pills, BTW, and don't intend to for the time being.

Nothing about this in the wikpedia article about PPI's incidentally

I had to have some after a similar episode a couple of years ago. The indigestion got to the "I feel like I have been stabbed in the gut" type pain, so I went to the GP thinking 'Bugger, this must be an ulcer.' after Rennies didn't touch it.

I had the PPI (Proton plus inibitor?) pills and they worked great.

I'm not sure if I've made myself clear.... The symptons I'm concerned about occured after I took the proton pump inhibitor. Sorry if I've misunderstood your reply.

Just re-read. Sorry - that'll learn me to RTFQ

I did not get any of the side effects (the wiki says flatulence, but I would never have known the difference)

These are omeprazole. The original patent was Losec. They stop acid formation in three different ways.
I have them prescribed, and have done for about 9 years now since being diagnosed with stomach ulcers that reappear constantly if I am without this medication for too long. The very first symptoms I had were the hunger - extreme hunger. Would have eaten cardboard if thats all that there was. Followed by the agonising pain.
I know when its time to start popping these pills now, by the hunger pangs. A few days of regular pill taking causes the inflammation to subside and heal.
There are lots of generics now, and some of them I find quite useless for me. So I have to demand Losec.
You ought to find that you improve if you keep taking them. And, although its supposed to be an old wife's tale, drinking milk really helps.
What brand are your pills and what strength?

ETA. Come to think of it, I'm surprised you were prescribed these without any tests. They are quite extreme, and because of their action - the ceasing of the formation of natural acids, they would indeed have an adverse effect if taken in inappropriate circumstances.

Yes, thats why I am surprised you are on them without tests. When I very first developed symptoms I bought a packet of Rennie. One of those nearly killed me, it put me in excrutiating pain. And that wasn't surprising after I learned what state my stomach was in. I'm thinking the same thing about you and the Omeprazole - it could be the wrong treatment if your original pain is not from inflammation. Usually people get prescribed a Gaviscon type treatment at first, until or unless endoscopies are done and show up ulcers or something.

On the other hand. When I am in full throes of ulcer symptoms, the eating that I do to relieve the hunger just results in pain. It sounds like you aren't getting that. I think you need to ring your doctor and ask his advice.

ETA: Another thought. They are supposed to take a little while to work. Days rather than hours. Although I do personally find that the proper Losec ones act fast on me, and thats whats probably wrong with some of the generics - they take longer or something.
So it may be that the hunger pangs are just your original condition developing further, rather than the pill. Sorry to have posted so many thoughts, piecemeal. I just keep remembering things learned over a few years that I haven't thought about in ages, having got so used to my own situation now.
