FFS. In around four weeks time... we'll [fingers crossed] have our first child... We can't agree on names for a girl; boy - no problem, but the girl names are - as you can see from the list - giving us trouble...

These are all names which she has come up with. My only contribution was Anoushka. The only suggestion I like is Mimi, which is kind of agreed provisionally. Missus wants Sophia, but I can't take to the name...

So I turn to PH for a poll...

... and there's no way I'll agree to Talula, but I included it to show you what I'm up against.

Ella. That's my daughter's name. Short for Elinor.

ETA: Amber is my parent's dog's name.

I voted for Amber - had a really good friend at school with that name and still keep in touch with her now.

Also every other name on the list I know someone who has a cat called that. Anoushka is incidentally the name of a huge white persian cat that lives near me!

I find it difficult thinking about a growing young lady with a name that was cute for a baby...

Naming her (that's if it is a girl) India would be shortened to 'Indy' which then would suggest she's from Southall.

Of those Sophia, but what is wrong with normal names.

These days everyone is trying so hard to be different and alternative, the class will be full of Apple-Porsche-Lulubells, call her Jane and she'll be the only one in school!

Anoushka? Talula? Mimi? WTF?

Sorry but most of the above are crap and very pretentious-sounding. Stick with something traditional. Tracey, Sharon, Olga, Chardonnay etc.

(My friends little girl is Poppy - it's a great name for a little girl, not so great when she's trying to be taken seriously as an adult.)

I voted Amber purely because it suits a child and an adult.

Some names are fine a kids but when they grow up the name just does not fit and vice versa.

Like why would you call a baby Frank? To me it just is an older mans name...

Amber is the most popular name for female US porn stars.

We just had our first and agreed (FINALLY) on Leah Isabelle.

Have to agree. I'll put this as politely as I can, but they all sound like "stage names" to me.

True.

Why are people using these frankly stupid sounding names these days?

What happened, to Sarah, Katy, Charlotte ect..

Bloody celeb's calling their kids stupid things look what's happening.

We've also got a baby due in about 4 weeks (a girl, well we think so) and were in the same boat as you until recently until the OH came home one night and said what do you think about Ellie ? Both liked it, jobs a good un.

From your list I like Lilly and Poppy though.

I think Talula is actually spelled 'Tahlula' (Native American, 'running water'?) and Lilly is (generally) a surname, usually 'Lily' (as in flower) for first name.

Though these days aberrations of names seems to be all the rage.

Maybe Tahlula will be an appropriate name if your wife pees herself during labour wink
