Moving to London
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I've decided that I am moving to London. Once my house is sold obviously. I'm hoping to be in a position to do this come January. This town is too small for me and my ex, and besides I fancy getting out into the big bad world a bit more.
However, whilst I spend a wee bit of time in London for work, enough to feel comfortable down there, I really don't know enough about it to relocate without help. Help me out?
Flats - what area's are decent, which zones are reasonable commuter distance, what types of rent should budget for in what area's. Should I find a job first and flat second?
Jobs - I've been surfing Londonjobs.com but where else should I be looking? What recruitment consultants should be avoided etc. Any other tips for finding employment down there?
Relocation - what should I expect from a potential employer (don't mean financial)? What should they be willing to help me with, or even should I prepare myself for?
People - I only know a small number of people in London, what's the best way to get out and about.
Lastly - has anyone on here done this before?
Thanks

I'd go there for a scouting holiday for a week or two, try before you buy into it as it may not be for you.
I'd also very much suggest getting a job before getting a house, then you know what area your looking at, obviously check the prices in the area before taking the job to make sure its affordable.
Edit: oh and Good Luck!!

Good on you girl.
This will be my 18th year down in the smoke after my transfer. Best thing I ever did.
Come down for a weekend, and get a feel for the place see what you think , visit a few area's
Can get you some agency contacts in the Wharf if you need them.
More than happy to help if you need anything

Why London? because it's about as far as you can get from your ex without falling into the channel?
Don't get all this 'this town is too small crap' - this ain't the telly.
There's a lot of decent place before you hit London if you're coming from bonny Scotland ...

Moving out of the provinces, unless you are bringing a large bag of money with you, forget living in a nice area in central London, the best you will get is a small flat in a rather less desirable place.
This thread has some excellent suggestions and I still stand by mine which was the Woodford / Buckhurst Hill / Loughton / Epping end of the central line.
I may of course be biased...

Without being arrogant, I'm fairly well known in my town, and my every move would be reported back/discussed. Besides that he is being a nasty little tDon't get all this 'this town is too small crap' - this ain't the telly.

t now and it's only going to get worse. No - it's not about being as far from him as possible. When we first got together my plan was to graduate from Uni then go to London for a crack at a decent career. However I gave that up for him.
Now's my shot.
Don't tell me to go to Glasgow, half his family live there, it's a big place, but I did spend a good year working there and commuting. Didn't like the city enough to move to it.

Does this tie in with Rich1231's naughty weekend in London thread per chance?Besides, until he has his torture dungeon together it wouldn't be worth it.

NW3/NW6 (maybe more NW6 for the slightly younger crowd) are nice if you like North London, both are pretty close to central London. Ideal is somewhere halfway between the Jubilee Line and the Northern Line, then it's easy to get to a lot of central London, the City and Canary wharf.
I have heard unsubstantiated rumours that south of river has some nice areas . . .

you know they may not stock Irn-Bru in London though right?
Ugh! Wouldn't touch the stuff. It's crap. Next you'll be telling me they don't have tattie scones, haggis and deep fried mars bars.
are you a Part time Scot?
Our Operations manager cant get enough of it, to the point where he was actually upset over the fact it wasnt in our local offy, infact i think they ordered it in just for him!
Deep fried mars bars though...
