..He only seems to have one of late, a purple one.

What do we think the chances are that some smart arse lefty psychologist has told him this is a subliminal device which soothes/ instills trust etc?

Probably! There's a lot of power / leadership / authority associated with the colour purple. Roman senators had a purple edge on their togas too...

Any time I put anything purple near our lass I get told she's not doing that again.

It was a very rare/expensive colour to produce, I think the only source was from a certain type of sea shell ( conch I think ).

That's why purple became associated with power and wealth.

scratchchin Interesting.

I can think of a few chemicals that could dye something purple but I'm not sure is any of them had been discovered at that point.

He's trying to convince us that he's neither old fashioned Labour nor old fashioned Tory hence why he's gone for a colour inbetween the two. hth

I find it really odd, that Tony and Gordon have been pictured wearing blue ties, even at party events.

I know this is different but its the same concept: Celtic FC will not allow anything Blue in their publications, Rangers FC will not allow anything green in their publications, for the obvious reasons.

Think you're confusing Cochineal - Red Insect used for dies - with Tyrian Purple http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrian_purple - sea snails

Nope, the Roman toga angle is (holds up card) 'TRUE'.

http://saintbedestudio.blogspot.com/2007/11/liturg...

'Although the earliest archaeological evidence for the origins of purple dyes points to the Minoan civilization in Crete, about 1900 B.C., the ancient land of Canaan (its corresponding Greek name was Phoenicia, which means “land of the purple”) was the centre of the ancient purple dye industry. The city of Tyr in Phoenicia was especially famous for producing the dye; thus the name “Tyrian”. “Tyrian Purple” was produced from the mucus of the hypobranchial gland of various species of marine mollusks, notably the Murex. It is believed that it took some 12,000 shellfish to extract 1.5 grams of the pure dye! It can readily be seen why this labour-intensive process was so expensive.'

Darling seems to favour a purple tie as well. Why the hell he feels the need to associate himself with power and wealth is beyond me.

I used to own a purple velour shirt (well still do but banned from wearing it). What does that say?
