I specifically refer to hotels on those third party booking web sites, and hotels which are not big chains, ie those small hotels and guest houses which you have never been to before.
The question is:

When booking holiday time in this country ie weekend breaks or weeks away in England, do you book online without speaking to the hotel owner, trusting the hotel/guest house will be is as the third party website advertising the hotel portrays it to be, or do you (like me) almost always prefer to ring the hotel up first for a very brief discussion before booking?

I do apologise for the exceedingly anal and lacklustre nature of the post.
I therefore present you with this Cyclops Goat as a token of my otherwise jovial nature.

I always check on TripAdvisor, nearly every hotel/B&B has had a few reviews on there.
