As I have discussed before on PH I wish to move out of London.
I've decided to rent and can by all accounts rent a 3 bedroom house in the above locations for a similar amount money to a 1 bed flat in London.

Not interested in living in towns two/ten miles from one is sufficient, more importantly is work prospects, I'm giving up I.T and have re-trained as a Gas Engineer, with a view to starting my own business.
If push comes to shove I would still do I.T for a short while, so will be sending out two different CV's to catch the different fields.

Thoughts welcomed.

Depends where.

Wiltshire - nice county. The middle and North toward Marlborough and around the Kennet valley are nice. Swindon is not, although the villages around Swindon are lovely.

Trowbridge ain't great, but again the villages are nice and you are near Bath, which has a lot going on.

Going south in Wiltshire and you get to Salisbury plain and then the Army garrison towns like Tidworth and Warminster. Lansdscape is very different and so are the people.

Some great roads in Wiltshire I must say. Very suitable for hooning.

As for Worcester - that's lovely too. I know Ledbury a bit - that is very nice. Worcester is alright too. Go north and your are getting into the Midlands, west and you'll be feeling a bit Welsh, South and you are nearer to Cheltenham , which is the posher end.

Do you have freedom to choose your town? It can make a big difference!

Hi 69. can't comment on Wiltshire, but I have lived in Worcestershire since 2003 and love it. You can live properly out in the sticks in Worcesteshire and only be a short journey away from a town with decent amenities. I live just outside of Redditch (which is not the nicest of towns), but it takes me 10 mins in the car to drive in and I can easily find places to park for free. Lots of Indian/Chinese Restaurants and a new Cinema which is practically empty. Plenty of village pubs that serve decent food and dozens of village/farm shops if you prefer not to use the Supermarkets too often. I can catch the train from Bromsgrove and be in Birmingham in 20 mins if I need to be and the rest of the time I can get to where I need to be for my rural pursuits within 5 mins of leaving the house. You could move further out if you wanted and still be within easy reach of shops etc. Houses prices in Redditch tend to be quite low as well. Failing that, Bromsgrove, Droitwich etc are all fairly nice places to live in/live around. Intend to move out to the Abberley area when I have a bit more cash. A bit biased, but the countryside round there is lovely.

Yes, freedom to go anywhere, the town Swindon does slightly put me off a little, but if its where work is available I'm not bothered as will live outside any town/s I will have to visit.

In fact the business I'm looking at will unfortunately mean I will have to go to some sihtty housing estates (housing Association properties)to carry out maintenance, so will need to be near a place that's a bit rough around the edges.
As I live in London, I'm surrounded by sihtty housing estates anyway smile

Being a neighbour (in Berksire) and having lived there, I prefer Wiltshire, just because you can live in beautiful rolling countryside, yet be 20 mins from the M4, near the main line to Paddington/Wales or Paddington/Cornwall.

Salisbury (South) and Swindon (North) are the main towns, but proximity to Reading, Bath, Bristol, Southampton/Portsmouth, Cheltenham are a bonus.

Easy to get on the A303, A34, M4, M5 means you can get to and get out of the area quite easily.

Nothing against Worcestershire, which is similarly well connected, but because it's further north and closer to Wales, that counts against it in my eyes!

Not before we do - we're in a little village in north worcestershire, and looking around the Abberley / Martley / Shelsley area at the moment. Worcs is in many ways a forgotten county in that whilst Oxon / Goucs has sky rocketed, many of the areas of Worcs have remained reasonably priced, particularly the villages. Despite being in a sleepy little village, 40 mins has us in the centre of Birmingham or the Airport, 15 mins on the M42, 10 mins into Worcester itself, and 15 mins to Pershore for free parking and a quick hop on the train to Paddington. We both work much of the time in London and I can both take the choo-choo or car and be in the west end quicker than several colleagues can get in from Surrey or the like...

Wilts is also lovely - we had considered moving in that direction, but are now tied to the kids school which we are loath to give up. Maybe some time in the future, but not for lack of love for Worcs. Oh, and yes, you'll be horrified at London costs if you come out here - £600k would get you 6 beds, garages, stables and acres easily.

Give Worcestershire a good look....Its on the doorstep of the Welsh Mountains for hooning...but far enough from the sheep to be safe!

If you want a nice, but not to remote place to live, check out Malvern....Not much nightlife (you go to worcester for that), but its a really nice place....and lots of hillage to walk on...great views...

infact, I know of a couple of really nice houses that were up for sale the last time I went past not far from me tongue out

How many Polish, are in these area's, as much as I love them and their work ethic, they do reduce indigenous earnings capacity, ie Portsmouth/Southampton.

Where I live now is absolutely full of Polish,Brazilians, most of eastern Europe, Somalia and Africa India Pakistan and on and on.

No doubt I'll get sgged off for this but hey-ho, here goes! smile

Rightly or wrongly what I'm after is to live mainly among my own countrymen, I've spent 95% of my life living with immigrants and I (white) have been the minority since the mid 70's(in the borough of Brent).

I want a change from this, as I don't feel very English anymore, walk down any High St in Brent and you will see what I mean.
London is a great melting pot, which I have divulged and devoured in great and copious amounts, but now I want something different, time to move on.
It is after all my life and this is how I now wish to live it.

I'd go for Worcestershire every time.

Central location, lovely places nearby, beautiful city to walk round, and you can go for amazing drives in the Malverns too.

Not far from Cheltenham for good shopping too...!! (sorry, I'm female, I like shopping, what can ya do?)

Live in Malvern and you're only 20 minutes by car to Cheltenham. Malvern Wells/Welland side is the nicer part.

As said, Malvern Wells or Weland.... Or if you want to be a tiny biy further away from town... Go to West Malvern/upper collwall...(you get to see the sunset on that side of the hill!)

To be honest anywhere rural is going to fulfil that part of the spec.
