So we've had their, there and they're. We've had brought/bought.

Where do people stand on sentences such as "the dishes need doing" and "the floor needs hoovering"?

Surely the correct forms are "the dishes need to be done" and "the floor needs hoovered".

I don't understand your question

What do you want 'do' to them?

Or are you a dish rapist?

No, no, no!

"The dishes need doing", while you could have chosen a better verb, such as "washing" is correct. "Doing" is a gerund - a verbal noun. It is what the dishes need, just as a car might need petrol at one time and washing at another.

"The floor needs hoovered" is odd and wrong.
