Well, three weeks ago, I ended up in the A&E in the middle of the night. My lower mouth was full of blister, my throat hurt like hell, I couldnt swallow and I had the raging sts like you wouldnt beleive.

I'd had a couple of beers and a meal earlier in the evening (about 7 hours before). I'd felt no ill effects until about 6 hours after the meal.

I had to take anti hystamines to control the effects, which lasted about 12 hours. My mouth and throat was raw for several days.

This saturday night the same happened again, but to a lesser extent (as I hadnt eaten much of the meal I suspect).

First time I'd had an Indian meal. Second time i'd had a Chinese. The common factor in both meals was mild (as in not hot) curries.

Seems I've taken a dislike to my favourite meal, a curry. No effects at the time of consumption.

Meal were purchased 100 miles apart.

Anyone else developed such a violent and sudden reaction to a food? I cant beleive I'm alergic to a curry or whatever addetive happens to be in it. Am I going to have to give up having 'ruby' in my life....?

Sounds like you just got a bad one the first time and your body went into auto mode on the second one.

There may have been nuts or traces in both meals. I've got a mild nut allergy and always have to be very wary of any curry.

After happily eating it since childhood my Mrs suddenly became allergic to Chicken around 12 years ago.
She'll feel a tightening of the throat and have bad hot flushes. She's since not been able to eat Tuna as it has the same reaction.
After having an allergy test the Dr has told her she's an allergic person and if her lips turn Blue go to the Hospital.

Best of luck biggrin

To the OP, I'm guessing you had a beer or two with each meal. Think yourself lucky you haven't developed an allergy to alcohol - or have you?

I'm NOT a doc, but it sounds similar to MSG poisoning... I am slightly allergic to MSG and get similar but not so serious effects after some chinese food. STRESS I'm not a doc, so go and see one!

Could be lots of things - the chillies, nuts (from the oil), etc.

OP should ask GP to book him in for some allergy tests to identify what it is. Some allergies can be uncomfortable, others can be significantly wose (as as been described).

Best to find out exacty what is casuing the problem.

This isn't uncommon, as you get older wink your body changes the way it deals with things. The only way to find out is to either go for tests or eliminate everything but bland foods and add them back in slowly and monitor your reaction.

For example I had a distate for salt when I was younger, now I quite like it wink

Time for a trip to the quack for some tests and an epi-pen (Adrenalin injector for emergencies.)

I reckon it will be nuts as well, I'd go for a test ASAP as subsequent reactions can get progressively worse.

A friend of mine went to the UAE recently and ate some nuts on the flight home. He had never had any previous allergies and could happily eat nuts previously, but for some reason he had a reaction to these and the plane had to be diverted to let him get medical treatment. He now has to be very careful what he eats.

I'd suggest its a hypersensitivity to something. In the case of bee stings for example, you can be fine until one sting sets your immune system going. The next time you get stung, your antibodies go beserk and turn on you - anaphylactic shock - and yes, it can kill.

I'm not well enough up on immunology to give you the full technical rundown but that's the general idea.
