I'm (partially) intrigued to see income, expenditure and assets of the Government, so is there somewhere where I can see or get hold of Government accounts?

Really? Surely we should be able to access this under the freedom of information act somehow - the Royals do it, Public companies have to do it, so why can't our Government who are answerable (!) to us publish details of how much money they take from us and how it's spent?

Is there anywhere that shows the debt of each country? like a world table of the best and worst with their cash?. I can imagine Switzerland would be up the top along with the oil rich countries.

£161bn on Benefits??

I'd like to know what "£130bn Everything Else" breaks down to though.

Benefits = Income tax

whichever way I look at it, that's just not good.

And it's only going to go up.

Next years accounts...

Massive liabilities taken on for the banks and for guaranteeing deposits.

Massive reduction in income tax take.

Massive increase in benefits exposure.

We're fooked.

At a glance from what's not already listed, it includes transport, housing, industry and agriculture support, public sector pensions, overseas aid and sport (i.e. Olympics) to name a few.

Those figures are bit out of date now though. Treasury site gives figures of £618bn to £575bn for the current year.

A big chunk of that 161Bn must be old age pensions right?

I have next to no understanding of this sort of thing at a high level, but the above is what I thought as well when I saw the figures. I'm genuinely not sure whether that's a sign of a highly advanced welfare state or a sure-fire indicator that this country is f*cked.

AFAIK, public sector pensions are a seperate line in the accounts. Social Security only includes the basic State pension as funded by NI.

Yes, but I'd be interested to see just what the pension liability figure is.

Pick a really high number.

Double it.
