The thread about the UFOs appearing over major cities on the 14th of October got me thinking about the real world affects should this happen.

It's a pointless discussion if they have malign intent, so imagine they were friendly. What do you think would happen, would society collapse or would we rise to the situation? How would it affect the world around us?

I suspect there would be some interesting religious discussions.

As long as they worked hard and paid their taxes, I'd have no problems with them.

Whether intentions are malign or otherwise we'd get a fair amount of chaos.....the masses are not set up to accept such an eventuality.

Not sure I would be overly happy about it.

Panic.

We have had 50 years of Sci-Fi telling us that aliens are only out to eat us - thats a lot of negative marketing!

Religious discussions would be largely moot - as the highly religious will say it is a trick of the devil (or somesuch nonesense), the moderately religious will say that God created them and everyone else will just panic.

I'd be excited. The biggest milestone in our history since we fell out of a tree and decided that walking all hunched up didnt look good for the lady-apes.

I would like to think things would go the way Star Trek had things... different alien races working together.

Bloody aliens coming here taking our jobs and women..

Watching ***** gives a good example (sort of).

  • ** Oh hell, what was that programme called? I am racking my brain, you know, the one where they had bald heads, I think he was a detective or something. TV series about 10 years (ish) back.

I think it depends on intent - obviously.

Then I always settled on if a civilisation could survive for long enough to develop some kind of interstellar travel, it most likely wouldn't be hostile. They would be curious explorers and most likely not want to reveal themselves.

In terms of reaction to a benevolent alien presence, I think just knowing we weren't alone would do a lot of good. I think it would create a more of an international common purpose than always fighting each other.

UK would embrace and welcome them into our community, giving free housing and benefits
France would shove them on lorry heading for the UK and say not our problem.
Italy would run for the hills
The church would think us some God answer even though they know their theroy is now proved bllox. (man being the most intelegent of all Gods creatures)
USA would realise they arnt top dogs any more and be really pissed off, try to steal their technology then shout and scream at them to go away as they are altering the earths statusquo.

Fear, panic, religious nutters abound, half the world saying 'kill it!!!', resentment sets in as they choose a nation to initiate contact with.

To be honest, any civilised beings that visit will take one look at the worlds media emmissions and think 'fk that, lets go somewhere else'

No wonder the US government have kept it a secret for so long wink

Largely depends on their form I think.

Long necked, wrinkly, a bit like Ghandi in a hall of mirrors or cute and fluffy with a slightly Jewish sense of humour - Good.

Human formed, bit reptilian, here to steal our water - bad.

I think it would be interesting to see what technological and thus financial affects it would have. For example, here's a technology that removes the need for oil and gas. Bang go the financial markets and companies that use oil and gas.
