The current law on smacking children: It is allowed providing you dont leave a mark, which is worrying as some children bruise very very easily.
An outright ban is imminent it seems, but is it a good idea?

I/we are getting one shortly. I hope I never have to hit him; I'm quite sure it will hurt me more than him.

But, 'The Banny State' is not a good thing. So, no.

Yes. It's abuse.

The law doesn't allow you to smack any adult when you feel like disciplining them, why should it be ok to attack children?

Trying to control children through violence or threats of violence doesn't work. That much is clear; if you head to any council estate in the UK around 7.30pm on Friday when hoardes of well slapped youths take control of the streets.

Is it OK to slap your girlfriend, so long as you don't bruise her?

So your child bites his younger brothers arm or pokes his eye out with a pencil, or stamps on your dogs testicles, you just simply say NO don't do that
it's nasty and make him/her sit in the corner? for them then to bite you? etc etc etc?

Respect is needed, rarely smack mine as they know how too behave, i only need my voice, but sometimes that's not enough.

I got my arse smacked once or twice as a child, but only when I was being a right as I recall. Didn't do me any harm. At first I didn't see why the goverment should be able to tell genuine, loving and caring parents how to raise their children.

I've since realised that most parents these days are none of those things, so the ban is there to prevent the jacked up chain smoking doleys battering their poor Talula-Champagne to death for having the cheek to try and escape from the basement during Jeremy Kyle.

I think it's okay to discipline small children as a last resort by a softish smack - which normally works (it did for me) but obviously as they get older, it just looks stupid, trying to smack the legs for a 13yo lad!

Proper ull-on smacking though (time and time again) is a big no-no though and is actually assault.

Since when is it attacking? It is a smack. The law doesn't let you smack any adult when you feel like it because they are not YOUR CHILDREN!! There is a slight difference between a random adult and your own child. It is your responsibility to bring up your child the way you think best. There are a lot worse things than smacking a child. I'm not talking about all the time obviously, but as a form of discipline when they need teaching that they have crossed a line that cannot be crossed.

I was smacked as a child, sometimes pretty damn hard by my dad. I learnt that when I had been smacked I had crossed a line, and that it was way more serious than when he just told me off. It works!

Would you rather the situation continues where kids get more and more unruly in full knowledge that they can never be properly disciplined.

what if your kids are harder than you are?

would they be allowed to knock you out? only my 15 year old daughter has a mean right hook that is kinda scary.

i'm no chicken but I would hate to feel the full force if it landed properly
