Walking back from shopping earlier I turned into my road and there was a woman (about 60 I guess) staggering about in the front garden of the house on the corner. She had lost her shoe and was trying to put it back on when she just went over and hit the deck.

I went over to her to see how she was and see if I could help but she seemed a bit distant. I helped her get to her feet and soon realised she was pissed out of her head. Don't know if it was the fall she had just had or an earlier one but she had a graze on her cheekbone and looked like she had had a few tumbles already.

I confirmed with her that it was her house and helped her to her front door. It was then I found out that she had just lost her husband of 25 years recently and she was in a real emotional mess - as well as pissed up.

I asked her if there was anybody she could call - friends/family - but she said no one.

I didn't know what else to do but try and comfort her a bit but didn't want to end up in her house having never met the lady before.

Don't know what else I could have done and don't know what state shes in now ?

All a bit sad and to be honest I was a little shocked. frown

I would've called the police - they have family liason officers available and would be able to find out who her GP is to get her some kind of counselling/treatment...

Seriously though, I think its great what you did. You showed someone that a complete stranger cares. Believe me, I am sure it meant alot to her. You should send her some flowers or leave a note or something to make her feel really good. Say something like,

"I was the gentleman who helped you earlier today. I hope everything is well, and I wish you the best. Just know there are people who care."

I can bet she would be overwhelmed with happiness. People get lonely, people get lost, simple things like what you did, and a followup can mean the world to others.

It sounds like you got it about right. If she's lost her partner and has no-one else she might well just have turned to the bottle for some comfort; at least you showed that someone else cares. It's a tough call on phoning the authorities- they seem to manage inaction and over-reaction and nothing in between. frown

Maybe pop around later and check how she's faring?

If I stopped for every problem I see on the streets each day I would not have time to do a job hehe

Still good on you chap, more humility than I could ever possess.

You were very brave to do what you did, you could have got yourself into all sorts of trouble. Perhaps you should call and see her again when shes sober and check shes ok? if she has nobody, perhaps she'll leave you her house, in her will. biggrin
