A Mencap spokesman said the charity was "appalled" that such "offensive language" was still being used.
"People with a learning disability are a valuable part of our society and it is a disgrace that they are treated as objects to make fun of," he said.
How, exactly?

They are certainly valid individuals in their own right, and equal and just as worthy as any in the populace. How, though, are they 'valuable'?

Oh st. I'm going to get slaughtered.

No you're not, at least not from me. I questioned that when I read it - what "valuable" contribution do they make to society, exactly? I'm not putting "special" people down at all, but I think it's stretching the imagination to describe them as "valuable".

And isn't making such a hoo-hah about an off-the-cuff remark like this just re-affirming the association between this phrase and the aforementioned people?

I'd say the were bloody valuable to many people, especially those on a £60k salary to be spokesman of Mencap and the like.

It's so cruel, and you mustn't laugh, but my bro used to sit in the stands at our local ground behind the disabled area. The whole ground knew it as; "the cabbage patch"
