Good afternoon gentlemen

There are, like myself, a fair few people on PH who work in the 'city'.
Today marks the culmination of a truly s***y week. We all, weather directly involved or not, are poorer today than we were 7 days ago. This I can handle, it part of life. Live high on the hog for long enough and it's bound to bite you in ass at some point.

However what I really, truly mother f****** can't take anymore is commentary from the average man in the street. He who has neither the ability nor the gumption to get off his fat ass and really, really, really try and understand what is happening and why. If I hear one more moaning halfwit called Barry bang on about how his money is being used to bail out, prop up, save, pay, incompetents in the city I'll set the fat trud alight. Does he really believe that all those who work in the city somehow siphon off huge chunks of cash from their PAYE!!!??? It's their tax dollars as well you t*****, were all losers.
And how's it all the 'city's' fault? I didn't hear him and Sharon moaning about their buy now pay 2010, 2 year 0% finance, DFS three piece, low low APR, free aircon, alloy wheels, metallic paint, equity release, Caribbean, flat screen, extension, buy to let existence for the last decade..!!! And now, and now they have the temerity to clamour from the roof tops that those who work in the city should have their bonuses scrapped ne' BANNED...How dare they! Who the f*** do you think you are? Who are you to tell those who have worked hard and fairly that they should be punished for a whole nations greed and stupidity? And how do you define who works in the city? Geographically? How are you going to differentiate between the plank at UBS who ratcheted up their mortgage business and his colleague in wealth management that may have saved his client and his family a fortune in the last 12 months? What about the head hunters, accountants, and stockbrokers. The secretaries, IT and back office staff??? These people do the same honest days work as you. They have the same commitments as you. The same worries as you. Yet I am willing to bet they have not cheered the lay offs in the construction sector, nor the layoff to surely follow in the housing and retail sectors. It makes my p*** boil.

Of course there are those who do not deserve their compensation, Richard Fuld comes to mind, and there should be no reward for executive failure. But please, please, please don't lump the vast majority of hard working people in the myriad financial services and associated business's into to one big let them hang pot.

Right, I feel better now. I think I'll ride the rest of the afternoon out bathed in the warm glow of a sea of red…

What Joe Public also forgets is the greater risk those of us in the City take, career and lifestyle wise.

Have a well deserved clap

It does my head in to see people kicking the City workers when most of them are just normal employees, who work very hard and earn their deserved rewards.

Yes there are some t***s but you shouldn't all get tarred with that brush.

I doubt even "Barry" would suggest a back officer worker be denied a bonus for personal achievement. I think what pretty much everyone is saying (apart from bankers) is that it is indefensible in the current climate to continue to dole out hundreds of millions in bonuses to people who a) contributed to the current problems by recklessness or inaction and b) are already obscenely wealthy.

Has the FSA lifted the ban on short selling financials?

The DOW and the FTSE are not 100% financial stocks - so how does 'shorting' financials have such an effect on both these indices?
