Hi. I'm a long term lurker...pleased to meet you all bow

Anyway, from what I have seen over the last couple of years, there seems to be a wealth of experience in many fields that subscribe, and from what I can tell TVR ownership is now optional.

So, my question to you all is...any tips on how to successfully negotiate a payrise/grade rise in work?

Background is, big insurance company as employer, strict pay bands per grade, i am grade 3 but maxxed out this pay band due to exceeding in the role for last 3 years; Word out says more work is coming my way (due to someone leaving), which I am really excited about, but I need to curb my enthusiasm and ask for more money before I take the extra work...but how without coming across like i am not interested?

To be fair I am not too bothered if more actual money or just a grade increase which means I can potentially earn more money in the future.

Opinions welcome :-)

Don't threaten. Benchmark against similar advertised jobs, emphasise what extra you'll be doing for the money (might be best to wait until they load you up)

Don't ask for one. Keep your job instead.

Ok bit more info...Currently in lower management role and recently accepted for fast track development; current responsibilities at least twice that of my immediate peers, and includes european project work. Currently work at least 50hours a week against contracted 35 (not complaining just saying) and now they want to send more high demand work my way. None of my peers are getting any more work.

I am very well regarded within the company, i.e. they will not sack me! but I sometimes wonder whether my enthusiasm to take on additional responsibilities in the past without questioning my pay could have been a mistake..

now could be my last chance for negotiation on pay.

Well at my work we have yearly reviews where you are set targets etc - if you are considered to be exceeding your normal job role you can be be put ahead on the pay scale (i.e a rise) - maybe you coudl use that tack? soudns liek you coudl already do it - but if they are going to give you more demaning work then i woudl demand a payrise (politley)

Treat it like I hope you treat any issue on any other project you would work on. Keep calm, be rational, state your case, state what you would like, tell them why you deserve it and see what they say.
There is no magic to it.

well they didn't sack me! I am now thinking maybe I should have negotiated harder.. 3 separate (senior) people have asked me if i am happy and have accepted...! which makes me believe I accepted too easily....

Surely, this is the ideal time to ask one of them to act as a mentor & help you create / solidify your career path within the company.
