Off to Washington DC at the end of the month and am struggling to find a hotel for sensible money - any suggestions gratefully received.

Happy to stay outside of the city, but will be reliant on public transport, so no roadside motels.

I've heard the Watergate hotel complex offers some criminally good deals.

Stayed at Hotel Palomar, near Dupont Circle in the summer. Very nice hotel with spacious rooms. Not far from Dupont Circle Metro station. Four (some places say Five though) Star but the price was very reasonable when we were there.

Booked through Trailfinders. Looks like they have an even cheaper one though it's further out from the City Centre and I'm not sure how close the Metro is then.

Stay away from anything recommended in the rough guide.

Holiday Inn worked out well for us and not too expensive. Breakfast was excellent, and was given the seal of approval by the two very fat coppers who ate there every morning.

If you are staying outside the very touristy parts of DC, you're better off staying in Maryland or Virginia (The Metro does go there).

Some parts of DC are extremely rough, like the rest of it that tourists don't go to.

Is it really that bad?
I heard that there were areas (north east DC) that tourists should stay out of, but when I was there 5 years ago I wandered around on my own and never had an issue.

Where in VA / MD would be recommended as a base - near the metro obviously.
