...is not a place in which I usually do my shopping but work gave me a £15 voucher for my birthday so I went in to get some food.

Normally I do my food shopping at Sainsbury's, Morrisons and occasioanlly Lidl/Aldi and have noticed food prices going up astronomically across the board!

Today in M&S however, I was not prepared for the shock of such ridiculous prices and even more shocking, the amount of people putting item after item in their trolly without a care in the world.

A non free range chicken, medium in size was £7.30, a microwave lamb meal for one £4.50, small stone-baked pizzas £3.99, a tiny pack of queen scallops £6.99.

I bought some chicken thighs, beef stock, 6 small yorkshire puddings, a chicken and leek pie and it came to £15.50.

The old bat in front of me paid £22 for some ham, tomatoes, scones, mini trifles, liver & onions with creamy mash and some tongue and trotted off with her shopping cart feeling satisfied with her purchase, safe in the knowledge that "her Terry's" pit pension keeps her head above water on a weekly basis.

Sorry, rant over, but it is ridiculous that they should charge what they charge!!!!

You see, that's why you had a M&S voucher. Because it's "special".

If they'd given you an Asda voucher you'd have been pissed off wouldn't you?

Well, they charge what people will pay.

They have recently had some cracking deals on - but on the whole, out of my league.

Dinner for 2.

FULL dinner, AND a bottle of wine. £10.

Now that's good value.

I love M&S food - such a shame they can't do it out here in Dubai at the branches.

it's an aspirational shop.. "of course, the cake is home made.. but the ham...oh, the ham that came from Marks's" etc..

same with waitrose IMHO

.. although I do like some of the stuff at waitrose better than the boggo supermarkts (tesco etc) but I can't help thinking if you're going to spend that sort of cash just a) go out to eat and have done with it, or b) go to a butcher and get some proper stuff smile

That's incredibly observant of you.
You had a good, long look at her, didn't you?
Did you fancy her? Just a bit? Even though she was so old? Go on, you can tell us.
What were you thinking when you saw 'tongue' in her basket, you naughty naughty boy!

Why would it be supper? I'm assuming it's the main evening meal, otherwise why the bottle of wine.

I love kicking this one off.

Ha ha! I had a good long look at her because the checkout assistant was a token special-needs guy who only had the use of one arm so it took him twice as long to process said tongue/scones/liver etc.

She had a nice arse though! wink

I was going to say that Waitrose is way pricier but then the quality is far superior in my opinion and there is less bad child behaviour / beating per aisle!

I buy all my branded goods from Tesco because that does make quite a saving and then fresh produce from Waitrose but M & S is the only place I will eat a sandwich from and their Salt & Vinegar Chiplets are second to non!

Dervla Kirwan says it's good food, or at least she used to.

This is not just a sexy woman, this is an M&S sexy woman.

If you use Ocado you can get your branded stuff (at Tesco prices) and then your fresh stuff from the Waitrose range - two birds, one stone.

I always thought meal definition was a time relateds thing ie breakfast between 06.00 and 10.00 brunch between 10.00 and 12.00 lunch between 12.00 and 14.00 afternoon tea between 14.00 and 16.00 supper between 16.00 and 19.00 then dinner anytime after that. Anyone care to enlarge.

It'll look even more expensive given it's a benefit in kind. That'll change your tax code that will - 60MS is your new code.
