What with various economies going south is there a particular country or area of the world (asia, middle east) who can pounce on this, take advantage of it and come out of it owning large financial portions of said troubled economies/countries and indirectly ruling the world?

Is it possible?

I'd like to say the Jews. I won't go into the (drunken) rant my mate had the other day saying that it's their fault that the economy is collapsing and it's payback for the years of persecution they've suffered.

[Dons PC glasses] I'd like to point out that this is a joke. I am not racist, nor is my mate. Please don't be offended. [Doffs PC glasses].

There is potential for a massive shift in the balance of world power from the west to the east.

China were already well on the way to becoming one of the big boys before the credit crunch, when the dust settles on the new world order I wouldnt be surprised if they are fairly near the top of the pecking order.

America is a hard one to judge, but there is potential for them to lose their influence over world events...

Britain was on they way down long ago, loss of national identity, no real industry worth speaking of, we rely too much on other nations - we have much to lose

The Gulf states will.

They are already snapping up the rest of the world so all that has happened is that they can get it cheaper now.

Well their own markets have had huge falls too & oil has plumeted from $147 to $85.

Russia is in not fit state - its economy was only just starting to recover mind you they have huge natural resources.

China - well they have a problem ditto India, who is going to be buying their products when there are jobless/rising living costs? People cut back and new clothing is one of the first to be cut back on ditto new TV's cars etc. People make do / make the things they have currently last longer OR mend them.

You know all that oil money they had even before the ridiculous prices this year? It was all spent buying up stuff cheap and invested in their own countries - UAE & Qatar being prime examples - the ROI they got on the Billions has been calculated at around 350%.

They have more money than they know what to do with - even if the oil ran out tomorrow. The sovereign wealth funds of the rulers are simply staggering.

I seen an article in one of the local news programs last night that cobblers' businesses are booming right now!
