I've had a look on the websites but still unsure.

A friend has lost his passport (he thinks I lost it) and is going away on Saturday.

I can see stuff on how to renew but what about lost passports, is it the same?

Can I get it with his written permission? I would be going to the London office.

PS any hints or tips to get seen first / done quickly?

TIA

Phone the Downing St switchboard and ask for Peter Mandleson.

They'll probably know how to get hold of him, and he has a great reputation for expediting such matters.

I used the same day service a couple of years ago. Best to call the passport office and make an appointment. I applied at around 10am and it was ready around 4pm.

Not sure what it's like in Essex. But, I went on Holiday three years ago, looked at my passport and it ran out in 8 days. Had to get up at 4am and get a train to Glasgow from Edinburgh. Sat outside without an appointment. Got seen to 20 minutes after it opened. Paid (I think) 97 quid. Came back four hours later with a new passport. Happy days!

Yes you can. I did it in August.

Phoned up the helpline or whatever it's called to get an appointment - London was full, so ended up going to Peterborough instead. So long as all the forms are filled in correctly, the photos are done properly and you can pay, it's straightforard. They will say there are no guarantees though, and it is up to the discretion of the office (staff levels, how busy they are, etc) but it can be done. As it turned out my appointment was 9:15 and I had it in my sticky mitts at 12 noon. Cost 140ish quid (I think) mind you.

But there's no way OP that you can get your mate's passport for him. That's just crazy talk.

My old man picked up my passport for me, had to sign a form saying he could pick it up for me so you may want to see if that's a way around it

Similar thing happened with me, only I had to stay in Newport for 5 hours while it was done, what a sredfacet hole that place is.

I stand corrected, but it was the helpline that told me I wouldn't get it the same day.

They told me the same to be fair. I'll have to tell him to go!

A sort of related question - I need to renew my passport which runs out in April. I want to keep my old passport because of the various places I've been for nostalgia purposes (sad yes I know). Basically do they send you back your old passport or do they keep it and destroy it?

Just thinking I'd rather complete a form saying its lost so I can keep it and then get a new one.

this is also true for damaged passports. if my passport had expired or id never had one in my life i could of had it done that day and then booked my trip and gone, but as i had the passport ready to return but it had been through the wash i couldnt.
makes no sense. and yes you can do it for him as a friend once did mine but i wrote a letter with all my details and he took it with him.

They will cut the corner off the old one or poke holes through it, they have to do this as some folk have unexpired visas stuck in the old passport.

Here in Norway you can get one immediately at the airport for 45 quid (If you're Norwegian of course), or if it's a domestic flight you just make your own ID at home http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article182...

I need a passport renewal, and went to the UK Embassy in Oslo. I wasn't expecting tea and scones when I got there but was told gruffly by the security guard (who wouldn't let me in) to ''Fill these forms in and come back, and I only take cash''.

6 years until I qualify for a Norwegian passport.

Really? Any docs or helpline that can confirm this?
