Medical screen inc scans etc...
Discussion
One of the few things missing from my old hjob is the free annual health screen we received. That said, it was really pretty cursory as only involved questionnaire, blood and urine samples.
Wouldn't mind the full thing, and google is throwing up plenty of nonsense. Can anyone recommend a way of getting a full screen including scan etc done, in London, and whether things like MRIs are frighteningly expensive and unnecessary, or actually quite agood idea.
Having a bit of a look at my lifestyle etc, and wouldn't mind a check over. My pa got adult onset diabetes at my age and while I don't appear to have that, would be nice to know if I have anything else, or am at risk from getting anything else.
And no, this isn't a "worst I have an STD and want to get it sorted quick thread ever"
I hate going to the doctor, so stuff that doesn't involve anal probing would be nice.

Its always a good idea .... my elderly aunty has for the last few years been convinced that she had cancer and it was killing her. It go to the point where she was depressed and staying in the house, she repeatedly went to the doctor who did checks, even some blood tests, and then assured her that all was well.
Last week she paid privately for a scan. She has a brain tumour.
You really do never know whats just around the corner.

Sorry to hear chap - and hope she gets better/that it can be caught.Last week she paid privately for a scan. She has a brain tumour.

This is the sort of thing I need - scan, rather than just blood test/ECG and "consultation" ("do you smoke? Yes? OK, you're going to die" etc)

As far as i'm aware though she just made an appointment through a private specialist that her doctor gave her the details for.

But that's how medicine works in this country. You go to the quack who examines you and does some blood and urine tests, and on the back of that examination you decide if xrays and scans are necessary. If you shop around you can get a lumbar scan for £250 (IIRC), so it'll be similar for your lungs or your head if you want.So what then? You spend £1k on scans to be told what the quack realised the second you walked through his door*.
*You're out of shape and drink and smoke to much. That'll be £150 please.

Oh, and Hal, at the risk of sounding rude, the Asian community has a higher incidence of Mature Onset Diabetes than whitey. Not sure if its genetic or down to diet.
Not rude at all chap - absolute fact: we asians are much more prone to diabetes. Genetic, as our diet in this country very similar to that of Caucasian friends.Harry Flashman said:

Genetic, as our diet in this country very similar to that of Caucasian friends.First time I had TC I had about a dozen CT-Scans whilst on surveillance. This time around I'm getting MRI scans instead because the oncologist reckons I've had too much radiation exposure from CTs already. My point being, CT-Scans and X-Rays aren't risk free. Yes, the risks are pretty small, but I wouldn't want to expose myself to radiation unnecessarily. MRIs and ultrasounds don't use radiation and are apparently quite safe.
