well my lotus bag i got "free" with an elise has finally fallen apart so I need a new weekend bag - might as well get a hand luggage type one with wheels ( i have dodgy back ) that i can take on flights for long weekends - any recommendations for one that looks cool but is practical and will last?

thanks

I have one of these.

bit of a pain as i always get stopped and asked to open it at the xrays. very good protection though.

generally use a mulberry racing clipper now to carry on..

If you must have a carry on roller, that goes with the Lotus ethos of 'adding lightness' how about this..

Good sensible advice - Not!

Always buy well built practical luggage without any flash or designer labels. The designer stuff like LV is just asking to be stolen......

Samsonite gear is good and strong, and comes with free repairs - if you ever need them.

I have two suitcases. One for short trips (Samsonite cabin size), the other for longer trips (Rimowa pull along).

The Samsonite's lasted nearly eight years six of which were pretty brutal (air crew). The Rimowa is newer, a lot more expensive but worth every penny. The Samsonite is built like a brick sthouse whereas the Rimowa (pronounced 'Remover') is of a much thinner hard plastic which flexes and rebounds. In the shops they give a lid to jump on to test it. The Rimowa weighs less than the Samsonite yet is twice the size. When the Samsonite finally breaks I'll replace it with a small Rimowa.

If you travel to the States you need a TSA approved rolleyes lock on checked baggage otherwise you're supposed to leave your bag unlocked. The Rimowa has a combination lock but can also be opened with TSA keys.

For carry-on surely you don't need samsonite (which is fabulous for hold luggage). I like gucci bags for carry-on.

depends how long you want it to last and whether you want decent luggage or a fashion accessory that'll last a fraction of the time decent gear will.

I hate to admit it but as i fly around for a living and invariably have to fly commercial as well, i found the Ikea suitcases pretty good ,squashy (proper word?)with wheels and the right size for the overhead lockers, they come with a little extra bag big enough for a laptop,so far its held up well, but for proper luggage i have had an Antler hard shell suitcase and leather flight bag for 8 years and still going strong.

Mandarina Duck make great bags; very discrete and very well made. Nice range of soft bags for carry on...

was it the bag that fit into the boot?
we have one of them (still intact) and was wondering if it fitted in the 'hand luggage section'?

I travel a fair bit and have found Samsonite stuff to be pretty good for carry on luggage however the handle on the hardside case I have has not fared well and only survives thanks to a diy fix, it is also very heavy even when empty eating into valuable weight limits

Only two realistic options here - Tumi or Samsonite. It will depend how much you want to spend. Tumi are virtually indestructable but do cost a lot.

Tumi Tumi Tumi

Best luggage there is. You certainly pay a premium for it but definitely worth it.

Best place i've found to buy it is at Bicester Village www.bicestervillage.com/

Yup - another vote for Tumi.

I have one of their suit carriers and the missus has a cabin bag and they are absolutely bulletproof.

Not cheap but very well made.
