I had new windows fitted today - all seemed well until it got dark, and realised almost the whole of our upstairs now has no lighting. Any idea how they could have damaged the wires by installing PVC windows?!

You have checked the trip I presume?

But no. No idea how they would do that unless the wires go near the windows for some reason...

Are you sure it isn't a fuse? They might have been running some big power tools. Should have separate lighting and socket circuits but maybe not.

Ah, right. What you need is a USB candle.

I'm off to invent it

So, your lighting has packed up after having DG fitted, in the same way that the lighting might have packed up after say Neighbours or eating a Twix?

Struggling to see how there could be a link, other than wiring running infeasibly close to the window apertures, unlikely though.

Power tools and trip is a good call, other than that, what have you eaten lately?

Easy tiger, hardly a remote possibly that the two are connected.

Move the working bulb to another light on the same circuit and see if it still works?

Just wondering if somehow they have managed to blow a number of bulbs but not trip the circuit/fuse...

Well it's hardly inconceivable - big blokes, power tools, large windows moved into place and old ones ripped out of the wall...

Though, it could just be a loveable, furry gremlin of course - what's more likely?!

Sorry, I wasn't having a pop.

I'm not a fitter, but I just can't see how there would be wiring in the area to get shorted, even if they are drilling well into the apertures to fit expansion bolts to fit the frames. There just shouldn't be wiring in the area. If there is, and that is the problem, the DG fitters are the least of your worries, your wiring is probably contravening regs and may need re-routing.

Yes, you can come across TV/Sat co-axial, alarm contacts & wiring, door bells etc, all in a days work to re-route it through the new frames. But a 240v supply in the walls, within inches of a window aperture? yikes

One of my exterior lights is positioned directly above the double galzed patio doors so that's not so improbable.

My garage power and lights go off occasionally whe 'she' is in a bad mood. The laundry basket gets thrown into the cupboard under the stairs where the circuit breakers live rolleyes

Well, generally you get a light switch adjacent to an entrance door, so you can turn the lights on when you walk in, but still not close enough to be affected by say, a new door being fitted, in any way.
