Are sex laws unfair on teachers?

If a teacher has sex with a 17 year old pupil they face being put on the sex offenders register, Despite the fact that the pupil is above the age of consent legally in this counry.
Why only teachers? Lets say an Army Sgt has sex with a 17 year old recruit. Would they be put on the sex offenders register?
Seems odd to me. Not a teacher btw.
"The law is, quite rightly, there to protect children." Um, so when do they stop becoming a child then, when they leave education? If a 16 year old is a child then why do we let them join the armed forces?
Your thoughts? Please keep it 'mature'.

Too tired to look it up just now, but I'm pretty sure that what it actually said was where you were in a position of responsibility in respect of that youngster, you could be prosecuted if they were 16 - 18. I don't think it particularly applied to teachers, but I could be wrong. If a teacher has sex with a 17 year old pupil they face being put on the sex offenders register, Despite the fact that the pupil is above the age of consent legally in this counry.

The law is to protect those in authority or a position of responsibility using that relationship to gain a position of trust that could be abused over a younger person.
A teacher can sleep with a pupil of a school he or she has no connection to legally, though morally most would choose not to.
This law affects anyone with a position of trust over young people and IMO is a very good one.

Mine started from a note in my homework just before halfterm saying 'please see me' along with an address. Kind of spiralled from there. I feel quite dirty talking about it even now. I had fancied him for ages....still, not what you expect really.
