Hi all..

(there doesn't seem to be a 'travel' section on PH.. (other than the one in Events.. but this is non-car-related))

MY better half and I want to go away for a long weekend in mid november, and are trying to decide where to go...

obviously don't want to be on a plane for the whole time (4-days), so nothing too far away...

currently thinking of places like Berlin, Stockholm, Venice, Prague, Budapest etc etc..

just interested to hear anybodys thoughts/suggestions/info/tips on the whole thing really...

thanks in advance..

Piers.

Gijon in NW Spain. Beautiful scenery, reasonable weather, lovely city. An hour from Stanstead (Asturias airport and a 6 euro bus ride).

we're going on a coach holiday to the christmas markets in Lille or Normandy smile

I'd highly recommend Berlin if you fancy a city break, amazing city when you consider it was little more than rubble 60years ago smile

Salzburg. Not so touristy, and if you go towards the end of November, you start to get the Christmas markets. Lovely place.

Just done Munich for the wife's 50th Birthday. Stayed in the Mecure City Centre literally 2 minutes from the station. On the Sat night took her to the Olympia Park Tower Restaurant 181 for dinner which was B expensive but completely blew her away. Lots to see & do, we toured Dachau & public transport is peanuts so easy to get around.
Link to retaurant is here http://www.drehrestaurant.de/

Berlin every time for me smile

It's like London but cleaner, safer, more interesting, and vastly cheaper.

Venice - just because it is so unique. Have been twice and would definitely go back.

Barcelona. One of my favourites - well worth a visit, just be wary of con artists.

But for a November trip, my vote would also go to Salzburg - very nice that time of year (albeit a bit cold !). As well as spending time within the city itself, you can get a day ticket on the Snow Shuttle to one of the nearby ski-resorts (you don't have to be a skier). We did this last time we were last in Salzburg and took a trip to Bad Hofgastein. We spent a bit of time in the village itself and then took a cable car to the first station on the mountain. If your good lady has not seen such scenery before (as was the case with my other half), she will be blown away.

Why fly ?

Lake district, peak district, Scotland, Wales, south coast. All great and you'll benefit from being out of peak season on prices and lack of crowds.

Sitting by a nice real fire, supping a pint and awaiting your food basking in the glow of a bracing stroll or longer walk. cloud9

And you get to drive your pride and joy there and back.

Edited to add, if you must fly. Biiiig thumbs up for Munich.

Great city smile

A few years ago we went for a long weekend to Talin in Estonia.

They have a Christmas market there every year which is quite well known and it is a great place to walk around with old Winter Palaces, a fantastic modern art gallery and lots of great little museums. There are plenty of good places to eat and it wasn't very expensive when we went in 2006.

If you do go make sure you get a Talin Card from the airport which gives free or reduced entry to all these places, money off on food at some eateries and free buss and tram travel.

The hotel we stayed at had a private room with sauna and massive Jacuzzi which coat £15 to hire for an hour!

Oh and if you do go bring me back a bottle of Vana Tallin, the nicest liqueur I have ever come across and which seems to be unobtainium in western Europe!

Amsterdam, been twice that time of year, lovely cafe bars etc, dry but cold, you can sit outside (heated patios) with a very frothy beer and watch the world go by.

Also if your that way inclined smokinhippywobblerotate

But it's not all 20" dildo's and funny cookies, some realy quality bars/restaurants, good touristy stuff, canal boats Anne Frank museum etc too.

Wow... thanks for all the comments so far.. much appreciated, and really useful! biggrin
keep 'em coming!!

I think Berlin is a favourite for me so far.. although I will have to investigate Munich by the sounds of it.....

One concern I have with places like Venice & Tallinn, is whether there's much to do aside from the "ooh look, and old building" stuff.. Don't get me wrong, that's good in it's own right, but Berlin seems to have the attractions of a modern city too.. am I wrong to be concerned about this for the olde-worlde type cities?

Convenient and close but always full of Brits on day trips. Having said that, I'm off there for a few days in December on a Christmas market tour so who am I to complain?

Saltzburg sounds a good idea - wish I'd thought of that first.
