Saturday night. Had this pain like someone forcing a knife blade between by gums and my molars for just 21 hours now. Went to Gob-Doctor this afternoon, he confirmed my diagnosis of an abcess. I knew this because I have had them before, the kind where cold water actually helps by shrinking to tooth slightly to relieve the pressure on the pustule.
On double doses of antibiotics, the standard broad spectrum amoxicillin as well as metranidazole. I have taken the last of my days permitted ibruprofen and anadin extra about three hours ago, and I am in chuffing agony. The only thing giving any kind of release is the cold water, and consequently, having got through seven or so pints of water since teatime, I am going to pee every ten minutes.
I know it will get better, and I know there are many people who would trade their ills for mine in a trice.
Was just wondering if a) anyone else was sat up on PH with similar woes and b) if anyone knew of any non-surgical techniques for making this thing go away quicker?

Stick a bit of clove oil on it.
is that an ordinary household item? We have something called cloves in the spice rack.Toothache has to be one of the worst things ever, we all feel your pain sir
I just posted something and its gone! Grrr PH tonight is being rubbish!
Anyway, I'm afraid hun there's not much else you can do tonight, your antibiotics should kick in by the morning.
Keep the hot/cold compresses going.
Oil of cloves might help, but its a preparation bought from the chemist. You might have a "duty chemist" open still.
Please dont hold aspirin or anything against the gum, you'll end up with cheical burns too
ideally your GDP would open the tooth to drain the infection and relieve the pressure but he would have assessed that this aft. If your lucky an oncall dentist might come out
Hope you feel better soon

Sounds like may be nerve dying on tooth. Cold relieving pain is classic sign of nerve being irreversibly damaged and possibly not an abscess. Advised you speak to the dentist on call again and let him know the change in symptoms.
The tooth concerned has a huge by large filling in it already, and I think was root canalled some years ago (my mouth is not in prime condition)Jon C said:

Have taken all the pain relief I can about three hours ago, and I can feel what help they were wearing off rapidly. The cooling tap water is now making me feel ill, so I am having to just swill it round and spit out.
The suggestion of the London hospital is appreciated, but I am in Northamptonshire. I can get to a chemist about 9 am for some clove oil, so that will be my first call. Rex, thanks for your advice and kind offer. I may be in touch later if nothing changes.
Watched the whole second series of phoenix nights on more 4, am currently filling in time before the drag racing starts at 5.30. I am knackered.

NHS Direct, 0845 46 47 will point you in the direction of the nearest dental hospital / 24 hr duty service.
When I had my original wisdom tooth trouble, Ibuprofen hardly touched it but Cocodamol worked pretty well and quite quickly too. Oil of cloves is a natural local anaesthetic, tastes very strong and utterly VILE but is really really good at what it does. Try only to get it on the tooth and not swallow any, or you will gag. It takes 15-30 mins to start having an effect, and you might have to try a number of applications before you feel the effect.
Instead of just cold water, try dissolving some table salt (not low-salt) in it and swirling that around your mouth. It won't help instantly, but it will provide an additional antibiotic effect.
ETA: Pretty much any chemist should have clove oil, its about 60p for a tiny bottle that lasts years.

You can get something called ORAGEL from the chemist. its a tiny tube of high stenght gel which works in the same way as clove oil, but tastes minty rather than minging. Try that, and while you are there ask for strong painkillers that contain dihydrocodeine and take these rather than paracetomel. if i remember you can take them alongside ibroprufen, so over 24hrs you take take something every 3hrs if you alternate.
I feel your pain, have a cracked tooth with an exposed nerve but am that scared of dentists i am putting up with it until i can afford to go under general anaesthetic rather than the needle in the gum thing!
