Im sure i've read somewhere that there is either a website or service that you can sign up to that effectively takes you off the lists for cold calling companies or makes it illegal for hem to call you?

anyone know anything about this ?

I don't know about cold calling lists, but I know that some telesales businesses don't use lists; they get contacts from yell.com searches and companies mentioned in mags.

TPS. I signed up and it didn't make the slightest difference. I signed up for the mail service too and that did make a difference, but I still get a fair bit of crap through the door.

Telephone Preference Service

http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Been signed up to it for ages. The odd one or two get through but, not very often and, if you tell them you're registered with TPS, they don't call back.

I get them all the time, mainly for advertising. "Hello, is this Mr *****. Well, would you be interested in doing a loft conversion?" Why, yes I say. "We here at advert here.com are offering...blah, blah, blah.

Does my head in.

You should double check... Takes a while for the lists to filter through, but it pretty much stopped all my calls, bar those pesky American autodiallers.

Also it gets anyone daft enough to ring off the line sharpish as soon as you mention it yes

We have had a 3rd line at home that is now plagued with these frickin calls. The answer machine takes about 3 of 'their' recorded outgoing messages a day.

I've just registered with TPS on the strength of the info here. Hope it works.

They only have limited success, because a lot of these cold callers just use the phone directory as their "data base"

The best way to stop cold calls is to be ex directory. I have been for years and i can't remember ever receiving a cold call.

Yes, I did that a couple of times before we registered with TPS. hehe

I'd ask them to hang on, then go back to work in the garage, and come hang up the phone 20 minutes later. biggrin

Also registered with the tps. The occasional ahole gets through. If they are selling windows I make out I need ten oak framed 6ft x 10 ft windows for a renovation on a building and start asking about special features like uv protection and self cleaning glass. Its quite shady tbh, but not as shady as getting me out of bed and force feeding me some marketing bs.

I'd heard TPS lists wear off occasionally so worth re-registering your numbers every now and then.

I'm ex directory but have had over a dozen cold calls in the last twodays, all 'number withheld'. My answerphone is always on to screen calls but they always hang up at roughly the same point in my outgoing message.

You need to sign up to the Telephone Preference Service. This will effectivley stop cold calling from UK companies however it will take some time to go through.

Your telephone provider can stop all calls that withold their number. This should stop calls from foriegn companies, however, this will stop all witheld numbers...even those of your friends.

If a company calls you, and you answer, request to be put on their DNC (Do not re-contact) database..this is the only way to stop market research calls btw. They are obliged to do this by law, make sure you give them ALL your numbers and that will stop each individual company one by one.

How do I know all of this...I was a Market researcher and part of the work involved cold calling also I now work in Telesales.
