Les Arcs are pretty good and damn convenient for the snow train. Nightlife leaves a lot to be desired compared to 3 valleys and most Austrian resorts but you will love it if you get good snow. Drop me a PM if you do end up going, I've been there quite a few times and can give you the lowdown on a few heavenly off piste runs the guides and locals like to keep to themselves.
Good skiing. Rubbish nightlife. Not an attractive resort, don't expect picture postcard views etc.
Am with the others here regarding Austria, but am biased as have worked and lived there and with a family owned company organising trips there. Much more friendly, better bars, skiing concentrated into smaller areas, definitely better ski school. Also not difficult by train.

was at 1900 last year, 1850 was rather pretty but never went down to 1800
the pistes are good but not that much to do off the groomed runs - there's a good mix of red but too much flat blue and not enough black - if you do a good 6 days skiing you just be able to do every run twice
not sure if the big cable car to the next resort is running again (they were refurbishing it earlier this year) but it made the week's pass a fair amount cheaper
some nice restaurants in 1850 (except the really traditional steak on a stone place - worst meal I've had for years)
would be hgappy to go again but think Tignes is a better resort

:edit to say somewhere a little cheaper than val d'isere as £6 a pint is taking the piste:

When are you thinking of going? I went to Val Thorens in January and I'm going again next January. Not much in the way of scenery and it can get very (!) windy but skiing is generally excellent with pretty much guaranteed snow. Nightlife is ok but nothing special. Go for the 3 valleys pass.
I don't fly, so I just get in the car and drive - faster, more civilised and you can take in some awesome roads along the way and stock up on goodies.
Do NOT under any circumstance go to the seriously windy, freezing, treeless, stark desert that is Val Thorens. s
thole of the first rank.

bugger the snow train; just drive...
Yes! i went skiing for the first time last year and i took the snow train (night) first class, the food was naff the drink was seldom seen and i got no sleep i am normally used to no sleep being an insomniac but it really took it out of me. I have a gps on my phone and i tracked all the way and it only hit its 180mph once and only for about a min, this could explain we had to stand around for 3 hours in the cold waiting for it to arrive to take us back. I spent the holiday asking myself why i didn't drive. But after all this you want to take the train don't go first class its not worth it, we spent most of the time in the bar on the way back and had a much better time knowing that we were not going to get any sleep. Also the bar stops serving quite early so do as the regulars do and order 5 drinks each before it shuts!
just my 10p worth
(i also tracked myself skiing http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=110716 i was a fast learner haha)
i love Les Arc especially 1800, so the night life isnt fantastic but the slopes are.
if you want night life go to ibiza!
i will be going here again this season and doubt very much if i will waste my money on venturing over to la plagne.
the Aguile Rouge - brilliant!
there are a few really nice little bars, especially one where you sitt up in the eves, cant recall its name but totally chill out.
there are a few live music bars too.
'pah' to the people who dont like it!!
