Asain lass I went to college with down the road recently got married via arranged marriage.

Granted she's not 9 years old or anything, and lucky for her actually liked (and had known for years) the person she was betrothed to.

Seems to be a Pakistani thing (as opposed to a muslim thing), (forced/arranged) marrying of 1st cousins.

Lots of abnormal babies, too, as a direct result. Silly buggers. frown

If I'd known all this, my 2 eldest would have been married off years ago.

That's what the majority of arranged marriages are like, apparently.

There's a big difference between 'arranged' and 'forced'.

If it is all pre-agreed while the children are still children, the absence of a gun at the wedding makes the distinction somewhat moot. But, yes, as someone has pointed out- it is due to the dowry system, and keeping the cash in the family.

Still, it must make announcing the births a little more interesting. The relatives can have a little lottery on how many toes it'll have. frown

This could be the new service industry.

Why spend all of your Ramadan scouring the family for suitable sons-in-law? Fed up of hanging on the phone to Airlines, trying to book those all important tickets to Pakistan?

What you need is www .findasuitablepakistanifromyourfamilytomarryyourdaughterandkeepthecashinthefamilyforanothergenerationreunited. com

We'll do the hard work, so you don't have to (I might have nicked the tag line a bit).
